Important Advice about Food Safety and Ramadhaan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

As the hearts look forward to the month of Ramadhaan and all the goodness our Lord brings us within it, it can be noted that sometimes we behave with some level of heedlessness about dunyaa (worldly) matters, which might lead to considerable harm to ourselves, our family, and/or our entire Muslim community. This article addresses one such concern about food safety.

Whether you host a gathering at your home, help serve catered food at an Islamic center, or get involved in any level of serving food, you should know about the most recent guidelines by food safety experts regarding the preservation and storage of leftovers.

THE DANGER ZONE

USDA guidelines are based on scientific studies of how fast bacteria develops and grows in foods left at certain temperatures. One of the most important of those guidelines is the two-hour rule. Foods left out for serving without any warming device should be stored within two hours. Studies shows that after two hours, when food is left out in the danger zone, i.e., between 40° F and 140° F, bacteria within it grows much more rapidly, in a way that can be hazardous to our health, especially for our children, elders, and those more sensitive or vulnerable!

Bacteria grow rapidly between the temperatures of 40° F and 140° F. After food is safely cooked, hot food must be kept hot at 140° F or warmer to prevent bacterial growth. Within 2 hours of cooking food or after it is removed from an appliance keeping it warm, leftovers must be refrigerated. Throw away all perishable foods that have been left in room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is over 90° F, such as at an outdoor picnic during summer).

I strongly advise that we give careful consideration to the following matters:

1. These are government guidelines, based on scientific analysis of empirical data, not simply “What So-and-So has been doing for years…,”  and, “Nobody got sick…,” etc., claims that are not based on any actual follow-up or study, just whimsical claims. Community leaders need to take these issues very seriously and not dismiss them based on “what we’ve been doing” or other claims. Continue reading

An Easily Avoidable Mistake Some Ladies Make in Their Prayers

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

It happens that some ladies neglect the issue of covering the feet properly for prayer, while it is an issue which leads to prayer being invalid and unaccepted, according to the majority of Islam’s scholars. Sometimes we underestimate the priority of an issue, and sometimes that can have very serious consequences!

Allah, the Exalted and Most High, commands us to tell the believing women to cover themselves fully with their modest garments. He says:

وقل للمؤمنات يغضضن من أبصارهن ويحفظن فروجهن ولا يبدين زينتهن إلا ما ظهر منها وليضربن بخمرهن على جيوبهن
“And say to the believing women that they are to lower their gazes and protect their private parts, and they are not to expose their beauty, except for what is apparent of it, and they must cover their bodies with their khimaars…” (24:31)

“Except for what is apparent of it,” refers to the face and the hands, according to Ibn ‘Abbaas and the majority of the scholars.(1)

And Allah, the Most High, says:

ياأيها النبي قل لأزواجك وبناتك ونساء المؤمنين يدنين عليهن من جلابيبهن ذلك أدنى أن يعرفن فلا يؤذين وكان الله غفورا رحيما
“O you Prophet! Tell your wives, daughters, and the [other] women among the believers to cover themselves [fully] with their jilbaabs (modest garments). This is so they could be recognized and not harmed. Allah is Oft Forgiving and Ever Merciful.” (33:59)

In these Verses, Allah commands ladies to wear hijaab, mentioning specifically the khimaar and jilbaab, which are modest garments worn to cover the entire body, from head to toe.

This is required when they are out in public, in situations visible to men not part of their immediate family, or in prayer. The 31st Verse of Soorah an-Noor, quoted previously, goes on to list the close family members around whom a woman does not need to cover completely.

As for when praying, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:

لا يقبل الله صلاة حائض إلا بخمار
“Allah does not accept the prayer of adult lady not dressed in a khimaar.”(2)

It is reported that Umm Salamah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), was asked about what a lady needs to wear when she prays. She replied:

تصلي في الخمار والدرع السابغ إذا غيب ظهور قدميها
“She prays in a khimaar and a long garment which covers over her feet.”(3)

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him) said:

لا تقبل صلاتها إلا بخمار، يعني ساتر، فلا بدّ من ستر شعرها كله، وبدنها كله في الصلاة، حتى أقدامها تسترها، إما بالجوارب، أو بالثوب الساتر المرتخي الذي يستر قدميها.
“Her prayer is not accepted without being dressed in a khimaar, meaning: which is fully covering. So she must cover her hair, entirely, as well as her entire body during prayer. She must even cover her feet, either with socks or with a long garment that hangs low enough to cover her feet.”(4)

The majority of the scholars consider the prayer of a lady with her feet exposed to be invalid, with the exception of some incidental exposure of the bottoms of her feet in prostrations.

What about qadhaa’ (repeating the prayer after covering the feet)?

  • Regarding a lady who is incapable of covering (completely) because she does not have access to enough clothing, or because she is in prison and prevented from covering fully, or because of winds that blow her garments in a way that exposes her in the prayer, or any other excuse which is outside of her control, then she has fulfilled her duty, and no qadhaa’ or anything further is required from her.
  • When capable of covering, regarding a prayer that was just offered in such a way (with the feet exposed), a lady is to be told to repeat the prayer, as it was invalid.
  • Regarding prayers offered in the past, the times of which have ended, then hopefully Allah would excuse what was done in the past because of ignorance of the ruling, and Allah knows best.
  • Regarding a lady who knows this ruling, but neglects this issue intentionally, then may Allah aid her in fulfilling genuine repentance and in overcoming whatever has led to such disastrous neglect in her worship of Allah. She should fear Allah and be afraid that a small matter of easily correctable negligence leads to great loss on the Day of Judgment. She should seriously consider that the first matter of all her deeds she will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment is incorrect and invalid with her Creator, and then all the rest of her deeds would all be similar, and this she would be absolutely ruined on the Day of Reckoning!

The Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:

إن أول ما يحاسب به العبد يوم القيامة من عمله الصلاة فإن صلحت فقد أفلح وأنجح وإن فسدت فقد خاب وخسر
“Indeed, the first of a worshipper’s actions he/she will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, he/she is successful and triumphant. If it is corrupt, he/she fails and loses.”(5)

In another hadeeth:

أول ما يحاسب به العبد يوم القيامة الصلاة، فإن صلحت صلح له سائر عمله وإن فسدت فسد سائر عمله
“The first thing a worshipper will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, all of the rest of his/her deeds will be sound. If it is corrupt, all the rest of his/her deeds will be corrupt.”(6)

So being that this issue is an easy one to correct, let us fear Allah and be more diligent in our worship, so our sworn enemy does not lead us into ruin and destruction in the Hereafter with an issue so easily correctable!

What about that “minority” opinion held by some scholars?

While there is a position among a minority of the scholars that the woman’s feet are not required to be covered in prayer, ask yourself the following questions in all sincerity:

  • When Allah has commanded me to cover myself fully, how certain am I that HE, the Lofty and Exalted, has exempted my feet from this command?
  • Am I upon clear, doubt-free evidence that ALLAH HIMSELF has exempted my feet from His Command to cover my body?
  • Am I comfortable offering a prayer that the majority of Muslim scholars throughout history would classify as invalid?
  • How important is it to me to stick to such a position when covering my feet is so easy; something that would remove me from an issue of differing over such a serious matter of such potentially disastrous results?

May Allah grant us success in worshipping Him in the best way, and may He forgive us and all the believing men and women.

And Allah knows best.

Categories of People in How They Respond to Islamic Knowledge

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The great scholar, Shaykh Rabee’ ibn Haadee al-Madkhlee (may Allah have Mercy on him) said:

The Messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) provided a comparison about the knowledge he came with: “The likeness of what Allah sent me with of guidance and knowledge is like abundant rain which falls upon the land. Some areas have pure soil which absorbs the water and produces grass and much vegetation. Other areas have hard surfaces which hold the water and provide benefit to people; they drink it, give some to their animals, and irrigate [their crops] with it. The rain also falls on other areas which are merely barren lands which do not hold any water nor produce any vegetation. This is the likeness of someone who has understanding in the religion of Allah and benefits from what Allah has sent me with, as he learns and teaches, compared to someone who does not raise his head to heed any of that, nor does he accept any of Allah’s guidance which I have been sent with.” [1]

So people are of different types as it relates to benefitting from [Islamic] knowledge:

One type is like the pure soil, his heart accepts this goodness, and so it produces yields like when the soil absorbs rain, producing vegetation and harvests. It provides people with food for their animals and food for themselves, of fruits and other harvests. Such soil benefits [itself] from that rain and also provides benefit to others. This is like the one who gains understanding by memorizing knowledge and learning how to understand it and derive rulings, beliefs, and principles from it. Such a person presents these matters to the people so they could [also] benefit from them.

Important Advice from Shaykh Ibn Baaz About Nameemah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The great scholar, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him), stated:

From what is necessary to avoid, be distant from, and warn against is nameemah, which is narrating [negative] speech from one person to another, one group to another, or one tribe to another, with the intention of causing corruption or clashes between them.

It [nameemah] is to expose what is disliked to be known, whether the one being quoted is the one who dislikes it, or the one being informed, or even if some third party dislikes it. It does not matter whether it is exposed verbally, in writing, or by gestures and signals. It does not matter whether words or actions are reported. It does not matter if that [report] is about someone’s [actual] faults or deficiencies, or not. A person must remain silent about all things he sees from the situations of people, except when sharing such a thing would benefit some Muslim or repel some harm.

What causes nameemah is either ill-intent for the one he speaks about or an attempt to show affinity for the person he shares with, or maybe just indulging in idle conversation, chatting away about useless things or falsehood. All of that is Continue reading

Participation in Non-Muslim Political Systems Based on the Story of Prophet Yoosuf

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

An important clarification by the great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad Naasir ad-Deen al-Albaanee (may Allah have Mercy on him), on a crucial topic, in light of modern claims by political activists…

QUESTIONER: In Zubdat at-Tafseer by Shaykh ‘Umar al-Ashqar, in explanation of Soorah Yoosuf, he says there that Yoosuf’s employment (may Allah grant him peace) was under the authority of the king. He uses this as proof in this Tafseer; he says this is among what proves the permissibility of believers working in positions within a non-Muslim government. So what is your comment [about this]?

AL-ALBAANEE: I cannot comment until after I know what is behind this, because I could say: Yes, it is possible, and I could provide an easy example of that. It is possible, as found in our current situation now, when we do not say that none of the Islamic countries are governing by what Allah has sent down, but at least we can say that most of the Islamic countries are not governing by what Allah sent down. Is it not possible then to be a khateeb who admonishes the people and teaches them, meaning: under the rule of a disbeliever?

QUESTIONER: Shaykh, I was actually referring to the Algerian Parliament…

AL-ALBAANEE: I know that, my brother, I know. That is why I provided the example that would be included in [the generality] of those words. However, before that, I said: What is behind these words? I fear, and this is what I think is the case, and Allah knows best, while the brother is among our brothers, and I do not praise anyone, claiming it is his reality with Allah, but I am [still] afraid of what I fear is the case, that he has been influenced by the current [political] atmosphere, as these [political] parties endorse participation in parliament, and so they rely on this Quranic passage that has been cited as a proof in their favor, so they can work in parliament under a disbeliever’s governmental system. Our answer to this is from two angles, as a basic principle, along with an extension from that. In actuality, I had begun with the extension, so we could reflect about what the actual intention was behind those expressions. So I provided an example previously, that it would be possible to be an employee in some kind of position. The example was being a khateeb in one of the masjids, while the ruler is a disbeliever. However, in this position, he does not serve the interests of disbelief, nor does he serve the cross (i.e., Christianity), nor does he serve [the interests of] ruling by other than what Allah sent down. So when the intended goal of this example was this kind of situation, there is no problem [in understanding the issue], right?

Now, we ask the one using this Verse, let us call it the Yoosufic Verse, (“al-Aayah al-Yoosufiyyah”): Could it be understood that Yoosuf (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace), when he made his request to the leader of Egypt, “Give me authority over the stored goods of the land (i.e., the economy); I am protective and knowledgeable,” [1] was he going to rule by the governmental system in place, the one used by the leader of Egypt? Or would he rule by the governmental system from the Lord of all things? He would not be able to answer with anything other than the second answer, is that not so? [2] So now we say: Are those who get involved in parliament able to follow in Yoosuf’s footsteps (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace), in how they govern? “Bring it, bring on what you have been promised!” (i.e., How far off that is!) [3] Thus, this line of argument (i.e., this attempt to use this Verse to prove this) makes something permissible, yet makes us afraid of many things! The least that can be said is that it is now feared that this line of argument would be used against the interests of Islam and the Muslims.

Also, I can say: From the special distinctions of the Messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) is his statement, “I have been given a special distinction over the [other] prophets through five [things]…” and he mentioned among them: “A prophet would be sent to his people specifically, yet I have been sent to all of mankind.” [4] So the legislation of Yoosuf is not legislation for us. And from here we can disprove this line of argument from its root and base, is that clear? It is now over.”

[1] A translation of the meaning of Soorah Yoosuf [12:55]

[2] Actually, not any more. Sadly, today we actually have political activists that would have us believe that Yoosuf would rule, at least partially, by the disbelieving king’s political system, and he would do some things in violation of Allah’s command as a compromise to stay in his position! Refuge with Allah is sought from deviation, compromising our Religion, false explanation of Allah’s Speech, and baseless slander of one of Allah’s prophets!

The Importance of ‘Aqeedah (Creed), by Shaykh Ibn Baaz

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The great scholar, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him), was asked the following question:

QUESTION: Teachers focus so much on matters of ‘aqeedah (creed) in their call. It is well known that it is of great importance, and it has a great status, since establishing a foundation of creed is the great focus of Islam, however we hope you could re-direct our focus on social manners and repelling lowly manners when building the creed. And why is it that most often scholars neglect this so much?

ANSWER: In each case, it is well known about the scholars that they focus on this and that. ‘Aqeedah -as you have mentioned, O questioner- is the central focus. It is the foundation. Yet with this, most of the people of knowledge in the various lands do not focus on ‘aqeedah, despite what you have said. They speak about manners and other things, about prayer, zakaat, prayer timings, and other things. ‘Aqeedah is neglected, so much so that graves are being worshipped in their midst, things beside Allah! Shirk (polytheism) has even taken place among them, yet they do not even sense it!

The scholar himself may even fall into associating partners with Allah, as he lived upon shirk with his father, with his uncle, and with his teacher. They lived their lives committing shirk due to some reasons: They did not speak about ‘aqeedah. They did not have any focus on ‘aqeedah.

You find him teaching, yet worshipping other than Allah. You find him in the masjid teaching, but then he supplicates to al-Badawee, or he supplicates to al-Husayn, or ‘Abdul-Qaadir, because he has lived his life like this, he and his father, and his grandfather, and his peers. This is from the results of neglecting ‘aqeedah and not focusing on ‘aqeedah.

You find him to be an insightful expert on the rulings of divorce, endowments, rental (or work) contracts, zakaat, bequeathals, and other things, because he studied them and focused on them. As for ‘aqeedah, then he does not focus on it, nor does he know it.
Even when he is good [not committing shirk], he still focuses on the ‘aqeedah of the people of rhetoric, along with what such people delve into of rhetoric, and the beliefs which are taught by the people of rhetoric among the Ash’ariyyah, Jahmiyyah, and Mu’tazilah [cults]. He is heedless about the Salafee ‘aqeedah, held by the companions of the Messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace), what was held by our righteous predecessors of affirming the Names and Attributes [of Allah], issues of belief in Allah, the towheed of worship, and not associating partners with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and focusing on these matters.

Thus, it is extremely important as an emphasized duty that one must focus on ‘aqeedah. Let the scholars focus on it when they clarify matters to both the common people and the elite. Let the lessons be primarily focused on it, while they still give focus to manners and other rulings. Neither this nor that should be neglected, yet let the greater focus be on ‘aqeedah.

Shaykh Muhammad [ibn Ibraaheem] (may Allah have Mercy on him) used to say in his writings to some his opponents who would write to him, debating issues of ‘aqeedah: “I want you to study ‘aqeedah like how you study the Chapter of Endowments.” Meaning: As you study and give great focus to issues of endowments between the people, I hope you would study ‘aqeedah, the chapter about rulings on the apostate, with the same attention you give to the chapter on endowments.

If they were to study the chapter on rulings on apostates in the books of Fiqh written by the scholars of each math-hab, if they would only study the chapter about apostates and focus on it, the falsehood and polytheism they have fallen into would become clear to them. Yet, they are heedless about that chapter, as they do not encounter any questions about it, nor is there any focus on it. Instead, you find them busy with issues of endowments and their caretakers: How should the endowment be executed? How should extra profit from an endowment be dealt with? How about rent, how should it be rented? How should people interact with the orphan’s estate?

They are occupied with these [things], yet they have neglected ‘aqeedah, since they have no focus on it, and since the common people do not ask about it. Thus, it dried up, and they lost focus on it. People then began to fall into obvious acts of associating partners with Allah, worshipping graves and righteous people. Due to this neglect, you find al-Badawee and others, So-and-So and So-and-So, in Egypt, the Levant, Iraq, and every place, are worshipped along with Allah, while the scholars are dressed in turbans, calling to that, doing that along with the common people.

They’ve caused confusion about this matter, and neglected it, as they did not give it any attention, so much so that the common people have fallen into shirk because of them. They now remain at gravesites in dedication, calling upon them along with Allah, seeking relief from them, asking them to fulfill their needs, heal them, and grant them victory over their enemies. These kinds of things are happening among the people. Anyone who would deny this who travels to other lands, go by the grave of al-Badawee, al-Husayn, So-and-So, and So-and-So. You find the people remaining there in devotion. One says: “O my master, Fulaan, Help! Heal my sick [family]! Give me victory over my enemy! Do this or that for me!” So much so, they have even gone so far as to ask them for children, for their wives to get pregnant, or to give them this or that! We ask Allah for well-being! They have disregarded Allah, so He disregarded them; there is no power nor any ability except by way of Allah.

Standing in Honor of the Judge’s Arrival in Court (Shaykh ‘Abdullaah ibn Ghudayyaan)

QUESTION: It is well known that standing up for people is not permissible. Yet, in our court system (1), it is required to stand for the judge when he arrives, and this is enforced. What is your opinion about this?

ANSWER by the great scholar, jurist, appointed mufti, and member of the Permanent Committee for Research and Fatwaa in Saudi Arabia, Shaykh ‘Abdullaah ibn Ghudayyaan [d.1431] (may Allah have Mercy on him):

The Messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:

من أحب أن يتمثل له الناس قياما فليتبوأ مقعده من النار
“Whoever likes that the people stand up for him, let him take his seat in the Fire.” (2)

This is because standing is a form of worship from among the various forms of worship. Regarding the prayer, for example, Allah, the Majestic and Lofty, says:

وقوموا لله قانتين
“And stand unto Allah, devoutly in worship.” [2:238]

So standing is a form of worship from among the various forms of worship. Based on that, if a person Continue reading

Rebuking Others For Praying More Than 11 Rak’ahs [Shaykh Arafat bin Hassan al-Muhammadi]

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The following question was posed to Shaykh Arafat bin Hassan al-Muhammadi (may Allah preserve him):

There are some people who rebuke others sternly for praying more than 11 rak’ahs of Night Prayer, or Taraaweeh. What is your opinion about that?

He replied:

This is wrong. This is a mistake. If you were to refer back to the books of the Salaf, and the books of Fiqh (Jurisprudence) in general, the later ones and the earlier ones, you would find that the jurists in this issue differed about the number of rak’ahs, but only about what number was best. [1]

Some said that the Sunnah for Taraaweeh is that we pray 36 rak’ahs. This is widespread and well known to be from al-Imaam Maalik. Refer to al-Mudawwanah. [2]

If you were to read from the rest of the math-habs as well, you will find that they said specifically: 20 rak’ahs. They said that the Sunnah for Taraaweeh is that we pray 20 rak’ahs. This is the math-hab of the majority: the Hanafees, the Shaafi’ees, and the Hanbalees.

You do not find a single one of the early scholars saying that it is not allowed to pray more than 11 rak’ahs. Never. [3] So do not be Continue reading

Keen Scholarly Insight of Shaykh Rabee’ ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (may Allah preserve him) About the Causes of Differing During Crises and Emergencies

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

QUESTION: We are here together, and to Allah is all praise, gathered and talking to one another [cordially], without any differing between us. Yet, I see that when some of us return to their lands, they begin differing, even warning against each other. This happens even though they are all Salafees, their reference points are the same, and they all honor the same scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah in this land. So what is your advice to them, may Allah reward you with goodness?

ANSWER: I always advise my brothers and my children among the students of knowledge to stay away from whatever causes differing. This means that sticking to the texts [of revelation] is an absolutely necessary matter; it is a must. Yet, there are ijtihaadaat (attempts to assess and derive rulings on issues) which lead to division. Some ijtihaadaat are beneficial; Allah provides benefit through them to Islam and the Muslims. For this reason, the door of ijtihaad remains open, open to provide benefit to the Ummah, to guide them, to derive rulings from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace. The one who tries to shut the door of ijtihaad is mistaken, and he has no evidence.

However, firstly, no one is to perform ijtihaad other than one suitable for it, one who has equipped himself with the sciences of the Book, the Sunnah, the [Arabic] Language, and other things. This is the one who performs ijtihaad and investigates relative matters when nawaazil (crucial matters in need of important rulings) take place.

As for students of knowledge, one of them tries to understand as much as he can from the textual evidence. However, in current events and crises, no one is to speak other than the elite Continue reading

The Actual Footprints of Ibrahim at the Ka’bah?

What is “Maqaam Ibrahim”? And are they the Actual Footprints of Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace)?
Imam Ibn Kathir (may Allah have Mercy on him) mentioned:
The Maqaam is the rock Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) would stand upon to build the Ka’bah. When the walls became high Isma’il (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) brought his father Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) the rock so he could stand upon it, and he would pass him the stones. Every time one side was completed they would move to the other side with the rock, Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) would stand upon it (& build the high parts of the walls on each side).
The footprints of Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) were clear in the rock, and the Arabs knew of them in Jaahiliyyah.
Thereafter, the Muslims witnessed them too (once Islam was revealed). It is narrated from Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه who stated: “I saw the Maqaam and in it the imprints of the toes and soles of the feet of Ibrahim (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace), however, people constantly wiping the imprints (despite it not being legislated) have eroded them.
Source: Tafseer of Ibn Katheer (2:125)
Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen was asked, “Are the imprints in Maqaam Ibrahim his actual footsteps?” The shaikh replied: Continue reading

Important Advice From Shaykh ‘Arafat al-Muhammadi

Stated Shaykh ‘Arafat bin Hassan al-Muhammadi (may Allah preserve him), one of the scholars recommended by Shaykh ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree shortly before his passing (may Allah have Mercy on him):

We eat, drink, sleep, relax, we read and listen, but despite that there is weakness in us, a lack of action, a lack of remembrance, a lack of supererogatory prayer, night prayer, mid-morning prayer, and other than that from the supererogatory acts of worship.

Among us there is a wastage of time, and a creation of problems between us because of spare time – because we have spare time we end up becoming involved in problems and issues, we stir up problems between us. If you were preoccupied with memorisation of the Qur-ān and its recitation, and memorisation of the Sunnah and lessons, you would not have spare time for gossip.

As for the knowledge of appraisal and disparagement then this field has its men from ahlus-Sunnah, and the students are behind their scholars. However, we have begun delving into matters that do not benefit, matters that are actually harmful, that are causes of splitting occurring. If you know that this particular matter – a matter from the affairs of the world, some statement or action – you know it upsets your brother and is a cause of placing your brother into a difficult situation, and discomforting him, then why do you do it! Why do you do it? Why do you engage in it? Stay away from everything that is a cause for splitting and separating, and likewise from that which causes pain to your brother, or is a reason for causing him pain…

Translation by: Shaykh Taqweem Aslam Abu Muadh (may Allah reward him well)

Arabic source: MP3

May Allah bless and reward both Shaykh ‘Arafat and the translator. This is beautiful advice, and I ask Allah to allow it to reach our hearts! This entire passage reminds me of the beautiful admonitions we would hear so often from our beloved shaykh, al-‘Allaamah Rabee’ ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (may Allah preserve him). Moosaa Richardson

Pooling Ideas: Advise Your Brothers & Sisters Trying to Get Married [Interactive]

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

Some of us were married, and those marriages did not work out. Instead of focusing on the negative side of such an event, let us be productive and help others by sharing what you would advise a brother or sister considering marriage to ask about before the marriage.

Others of us got married, and Allah blessed us with good marriages. This is also a great resource for others. Your success -a gift from Allah- includes steps in a process that worked out well. So share what worked out well for you, perhaps someone might find a great deal of benefit in it!

The topic is potentially very broad. Culture and local customs can play a role.

Let me begin by offering some general reminders that some of us might find helpful, by Allah’s Permission. (Contribute to the content of this article by using the “Leave a reply” feature below.)

1. Marry people of upright religion.

The Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:

إذا أتاكم من ترضون خلقه ودينه فزوجوه إن لا تفعلوا تكن فتنة في الأرض وفساد عريض
“When someone comes to you with manners and religion you are pleased with, then marry him [to your wards]. If you do not, there will be trials in the land and widespread corruption.” [1]

When a person fears Allah and upholds his/her duty to Allah, such a person will respect and honor your rights, since Allah is the One who gave each person their rights. Openly disobedient people show the world that they Continue reading

In anticipation of the seminar, Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson stated:

Upon visiting our brothers in Islam and Sunnah at Masjid Alfarouq in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) earlier this year, based on the advice of Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Maghribi (may Allah preserve him), I was delighted to find such beautiful cooperation at an emerging community upon Salafiyyah there. May Allah bless them and increase them in good. Their good efforts to learn and host special events for the benefit of their community and the Muslims of Edmonton at large are exemplary and deserving of our support…

This upcoming fourth seminar, scheduled for the end of Muharram 1445 (August 16-20, 2023), in shaa’ Allah, is another five-day event, similar to the last one. This time, Shaykh Abu Muhammad will be broadening the focus of family matters to include more practical advice and guidance for parents and children, siblings, as well as spouses, in shaa’ Allah. I will continue sharing and explaining verses from the same poetry on Islamic Legal Maxims. After considering that a significant number of the local congregants grew up in communities and households where the Maalikee math-hab is taught, I thought to explain a small text in basic Islamic Creed by an exemplary Maalikee scholar of old, al-Imaam Ibn Abee Zayd al-Qayrawaanee (may Allah have Mercy on him).

Women Traveling for Hajj In Groups Without Any Male Family Members

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

QUESTION: If I came for Hajj in the company of a group of ladies, without any mahram (male family member) of mine, while I am more than 50 years old, is my Hajj considered correct?

ANSWER by Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him):

It is not permissible for a Muslim lady to perform Hajj without a mahram (male family member). The Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said, “No woman may travel without a mahram accompanying her.” [1]

Some of the scholars held that it is permissible to perform Hajj in a group of trustworthy women without any mahram, yet Continue reading

Unity When Fasting and On the Day of the ‘Eed [al-Albaanee]

By: Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen Al-Albaanee (may Allah have Mercy on him)
Source: Silsilatul-Ahaadeeth As-Saheehah #224 (1/440-445)

[ In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, may His Salaah and Salaam be upon his final Messenger Muhammad, and upon all his family members and Companions, to proceed… ]

Regarding the hadeeth:

الصوم يوم تصومون والفطر يوم تفطرون

“Fasting begins on the day you all begin to fast, and Al-Fitr (the ‘Eed) is the day when you all have broken your fasts.” [1]

At-Tirmithee, after mentioning this hadeeth, said, “And some of the people of knowledge explained this hadeeth, saying that fasting and breaking the fast are both done along with the Jamaa’ah and the masses of the Muslims.”

And As-San’aanee said, “In it is evidence that proves that agreement of the people is needed for establishing the ‘Eed, and that the one who is alone in his knowledge of the moon sighting must go along with the others, and their decision regarding the prayer, the breaking of the fast, and the day of slaughtering is binding on him.” [2]

And Ibnul-Qayyim, may Allah have Mercy on him, explained this, saying, “And it has been said (by the people of knowledge) that there is a refutation in this for those who say that a person can fast and break his fast based on calculated estimations, without others having knowledge of this. And it has also been said that if a lone witness sights the moon, and the judge does not accept his sighting (for some reason), then he himself does not begin his fast based on it, nor do the people begin their fasts based on it.” [3]

And Abul-Hasan As-Sindee, after mentioning the hadeeth of Aboo Hurayrah found in At-Tirmithee’s Sunan, said, “And what is apparent from the hadeeth’s meaning is that these affairs are not Continue reading

A Simple Guide to Dignified Recovery After Religious Neglect [Shaykh Ibn Baaz]

An amazing and insightful letter from a great imaam, the mufti and scholar, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him), to an individual who complained of weakness in faith and expressed remorse over abandoning prayers for a time and other serious forms of religious neglect. His answer is highly beneficial and motivating for all of our brothers and sisters who face similar situations; it addresses and corrects a common misunderstanding – that after abandoning the religion, or falling into severe levels of neglect, the process of returning is embarrassing, or extremely difficult, involving making up many prayers, or maybe even unattainable, assuming that someone cannot return because Allah does not guide the one who has repeatedly fallen into neglect and abandonment of his religion…

From ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn ‘Abdillaah ibn Baaz to the respected Mr. [*****] (name removed), may Allah grant him refuge from the devil’s whisperings and give him success in setting aright both his religious and worldly affairs.

To proceed: Your letter reached me, the one in which you explained some things you did and some problems you were facing, fearing their bad consequences. And we did invite you on 1390/7/13 to come visit in person, but that was not easy for you. So at this time we will respond, in shaa’ Allah (if Allah so wills), to the content of your letter:

Firstly, you mentioned that you pray sometimes, and sometimes you do not pray. You become determined to repent sometimes, but then you do not fulfill that. Sometimes, this laxness may have led you into abandonment of all the pillars [of Islam], and you have become determined to genuinely repent and put a complete end to those things, yet will your repentance be accepted [you ask]? Or will you be from those whom Allah has described as: “Verily those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, and then are increased in disbelief, Allah does not forgive them,” to the end of that Verse [4:137]? And is it required as part of the repentance that you openly declare your testimony of faith for all to hear? And is it a must to take a bath and pray two units of prayer, etc.?

The answer: Verily, Allah has clarified in His great Book that He, the Exalted One, accepts the repentance of His worshippers no matter how various and numerous their sins are! As Allah, the Lofty, has said [what means]: Continue reading

How to Date Things By Both Hijri and Gregorian Calendars When Needed, by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen

The great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him), was asked the following question:

There are some people who say: We do not use the Gregorian calendar over the Hijri calendar in order to avoid showing allegiance and support [to non-Muslims]. However, the Gregorian calendar is more consistent than the Hijri calendar, in their viewpoint, saying: Most countries use this calendar, so why do we stand out and contradict them?

ANSWER: The reality is that dating things by lunar phases (i.e. the Hijri calendar) is the foundation, for all of mankind. Read the Statement of Allah, the Most High: “They ask you (O Muhammad) about the lunar phases. Say: They are references of time for the people, and for Hajj.” [2:189]

“For the people” [means]: all of them.

And read the Statement of Allah, the Most High: “Indeed, the number of months with Allah are 12 months, in the Book of Allah, the day He created the heavens and the earth. Of them, there are four sacred ones.” [9:36]

So what are those months? They are the Continue reading

This unique resource brings the amazing poem of Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him) into the English Language for the very first time! From the introduction of the workbook written by Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson:

For those who did not know that our teacher, the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him), actually wrote his own poetry, then this poem might come as one of the most pleasant surprises imaginable! This original poetry on the topic of Usool al-Fiqh, was actually composed by the shaykh himself and then explained in detail over many classes. The recordings of those sessions have been transcribed and published as a 384-page book, under the supervision of the shaykh’s charitable foundation. I have included an appendix in the back of this workbook which includes the entire poem in the shaykh’s own handwriting (!), as facilitated by the shaykh’s charitable foundation and found in the Ibn al-Jowzee printing (3rd ed., 1434). The recordings of his explanation are available at his website at the following address: https://binothaimeen.net/content/Menu/lessonsince?tid=1221 Continue reading

The Importance of Learning Usool al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Maxims)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The topic of Usool al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Maxims) is extremely important for all those who wish to understand how evidences are applied to various situations. Ignorance of these principles and foundations can cause a total failure in understanding the verdicts of the scholars on modern issues of importance and their details and complexities. Without the tools by which to understand how the scholars derive and apply their rulings, even a sincere, truth-seeking individual from Ahlus-Sunnah might fail to understand their use of broadly applicable principles and foundations, and then falsely assume that they have spoken without evidence.

In his poetry on Usool al-Fiqh, the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him), stated:

اغْتَنِمِ القَوَاعِدَ الأُصُولَا ## فَمَنْ تَفُتْهُ يُـحْرَمِ الوُصُولَا
Take advantage of the qawaa’id (principles) and usool (foundations),
Whoever misses them is deprived of attainment [of knowledge].

In his printed lessons explaining the poem, Sharh Manthoomat Usool al-Fiqh wa Qawaa’idihi (p.44), he explained:

This is a principle the scholars have: “Whoever is deprived of the foundations shall be deprived of arrival at his goal,” and they spoke the truth! Thus, we must be vigilant about understanding these principles, learning all that is included in them, researching them together, and asking those who know more than us about them, so we could actualize the point of studying them, with sincere intentions and good follow-through. Whoever misses out on these principles could only study Islamic knowledge issue by issue, one at a time, as he has no foundation to build anything on [for himself]. Thus, his knowledge is flawed, his thought process is slow and irregular, and he forgets issues easily…

When Does an Injured Person Make Tayammum & When Does He Wipe Over the Bandage?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

Completing one’s wudhoo‘ (or ghusl) by wiping over bandages over cuts, broken bones, or other wounds is established as a legitimate concession according to all four traditional math-habs [1], just as tayammum (using earth, soil, or sand for purification) is a legitimate concession for those who cannot access water, or using water would cause harm to them. [2] So a wounded person has these options to consider when taking a bath or making wudhoo‘, but which one should he choose?

The basic rule is that tayammum is only valid when water is unavailable or harmful when used. So if making wudhoo’ normally and wiping over one’s bandage at the place of his injury is possible without harm, then this is the correct course of action. [3] If there is potential harm in wiping over the bandage with water, then the injured person is allowed to make tayammum in place of wudhoo’ in such a case.

Scenario A: A man has a wound which has a scab over it, and washing it with water does not cause any harm. In this case, such an injured person must make wudhoo’ and take a bath as normal, using water when available.

Scenario B: A man has a wound which is open, and washing it with water could cause an infection or delay its healing. In this case, such an injured person must not allow water to get in the wound, and he makes wudhoo’ or takes a bath with water as he does normally, except that he wipes over the bandage at the place of his injury.

Scenario C: A man has a serious wound on one of the limbs of wudhoo’, like a severe burn on his foot or a large cut on his forearm, and the affected area must be kept absolutely dry. Wiping over the bandages in this case Continue reading

Getting Serious in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

There are two important narrations from our mother, the noble Companion, ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which every Muslim should keep in mind as the last ten nights of Ramadan approach:

إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ: أَحْيَا اللَّيْلَ، وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ، وَجَدَّ وَشَدَّ الْمِئْزَرَ
“When the [last] ten [nights of Ramadan] began, he would stay up all night, wake his family, get [even more] serious, and tighten his lower garment.”

This hadeeth was collected by al-Bukhaaree (2024) and Muslim (1174).

In another authentic narration, she asked about what she should say if she were to reach Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of al-Qadr, and so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) told her to say: Continue reading

These verdicts were compiled from various written and audio content from Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādi al-Wādi’ī (may Allah have Mercy on him), and each verdict is supported with numerous proofs from the Qur’ān and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (may the Peace and Blessings of Allāh be upon him).  May Allāh bless him and grant him a very high place in Paradise for his tremendous contributions to Islamic knowledge.

Khutbah: Some of the Many Amazing Benefits of Establishing the Prayer

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance, and we ask Him to forgive us. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of our own selves and from the consequences of our bad actions. Whomever Allah guides cannot be led astray by anyone, and whomever Allah leaves to stray cannot be guided by anyone. I testify openly that no one deserves any type of worship whatsoever, except for Allah, alone, without partners. I further testify openly that Muhammad was his worshipful slave and messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace). As for what follows:

Dear believing brothers in Islam,

After having the correct creed and believing in Allah as He has commanded, then it is a must upon each and every one of us that:

  • We are obedient to Allah.
  • We establish His religion in our lives.
  • We actualize servitude within our worship.
  • We are wise and put everything in its place.
  • We actualize the benefits of our worship so that we attain some tranquility and some piece and mind in this world.
  • We become people with clean hearts, far away from foul deeds of an illicit nature and all evil deeds.
  • We are people of upright good character.
  • We are believers in truth, far away from showing off in insincerity, hypocrisy and all its forms, and far from disbelief in Allah.

If you have heard these words, and you say, “That’s a lot to embody as a person,” then please know, dear brothers in Islam, that you can do one single thing in your religion to bring all of this together! You can Continue reading

Khutbah: The Real ‘Weigh-In’ is Coming (The Scales on the Day of Judgment)

A Friday sermon by Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson (1443.3.9)

All praise is due to Allah alone, and so we praise Him, ask Him to assist us, and beg Him to forgive us. We seek refuge with Him from the evils from our own selves and from the evil results of our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides cannot be led astray by anyone; whomever Allah leaves astray cannot be guided by anyone. I testify openly that no one deserves any worship whatsoever except Allah, who is alone in that right, sharing it with none. I testify openly as well that Muhammad was his worshipful slave and messenger. As for what follows:

Dear believers in Allah,

The Day of Standing is in front of us! The great scales of the Day of Judgment are in front of us! The weighing of the deeds, the weighing of the record books, the account, and even the weighing of the people themselves is directly in front of us! Let each and every one of us fear Allah and prepare for the day when the great scales are laid down and the Justice of Allah rules over the people. Let us fear Allah and know that our scales are in front of us. Allah has said [what means]:

The Lofty Virtue of Not Responding to Personal Transgressions in Some Situations

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

Shaykh Dr. Mohammad bin Ghalib al-Omari (may Allah bless and preserve him) stated the following in a recent tweet:

Your silence about some people’s transgressions against you is not necessarily weakness or incapability, nor is it proof of the oppressor’s truthfulness. Rather, in many occasions, it is actually proof of your beautiful patience, good understanding, and how distant you are from desiring controversy. Lots of words do not indicate strength in proofs, as some people talk a lot, but they are not actually saying anything.

Shaykh Dr. Mohammad bin Ghalib al-Omari is from the trusted and recommended students of our senior scholars. Those who attend our weekly Friday night class on al-‘Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah will notice that he was the one trusted by al-‘Allaamah ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree (may Allah preserve him) to prepare his explanation, al-Qutoof al-Janiyyah. We have previously featured some of his insightful and beneficial tweets (here and here). May Allah bless him and preserve him upon goodness.

Vaccines are Permissible; Differing on the Topic Ended Long Ago, as Salafi Scholars Have Said

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

Recently, we learned from our respected scholar, Shaykh ‘Abdullah al-Bukhary (may Allah preserve him), that the scholarly differing over the permissibility of vaccines had actually come to an end long ago, when he informed us:

فقد تكلم أهل العلم حول هذه القضية منذ زمن طويل لما بدأ ظهر أمر اللقاحات حصل بين ذلك أخذ وعطاء فيما مضى، ثم استقر الأمر على أن هذا الأمر من الأمور التي لا تنافي التوكل ولا تضادُّه، إنما هي من الأخذ بالأسباب الشرعية

“…The people of knowledge have indeed spoken about this issue, a long time ago, when the issue of vaccinations first came about. Some back and forth discussion took place in the past, until the matter was settled, that this is one of those issues that does not invalidate tawakkul (trusting Allah) nor contradict it. It is merely an issue of taking legislated steps [of safety]…”

This was surprising for many to learn about, as some had presumed that the scholars still differed over this topic. One might say: “Perhaps Shaykh Abdullah al-Bukhary misspoke when saying this, as we have not heard this from the people of knowledge (other than him), and claiming consensus is a very serious issue, as an established consensus among the scholars actually ends the discussion.”  Continue reading

COMPILATION: The Speech of the Salafi Scholars About Covid-19 & Other Helpful Resources

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The following is a compilation of very important resources from the Salafi scholars living through this pandemic, aware of its specific details, in order to return matters of global emergencies to those qualified to speak about them for proper determination, as Allah has commanded:

return things to ahlul ilm in nawaazil

One of the most important and relevant resources on the topic for us in the West is this: Five questions from Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson posed to the senior authority of Fatwaa (Religious Verdicts) in this time, the Mufti Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez Aal Shaykh (may Allah preserve him):

  1. How do we know exactly what nawaazil (pending issues in need of verdicts) are…?

  2. What should be done if we enter a mosque these days -the days of the Coronavirus-, and we find that the people of this masjid are not distancing themselves from one another, nor are they implementing the safety protocols of the authorities, in non-Muslim lands…?

  3. In the West, we have some doctors among the Muslims, people of Sunnah and [good practice of] Religion, people known for their love of Islamic knowledge and its dissemination. However, in these days specifically, they oppose the official Health agencies, saying that there is no need for the well-known protocols of safety which those officials instruct the people to observe…?

  4. What should be our stance on those who talk about So-and-So, the government official, in their private gatherings, actually naming one of the authorities in the land of the Two Sacred Mosques, saying that he is causing corruption in the land, because he closes mosques and puts restrictive limits on those who come for Hajj and ‘Umrah, requiring them to follow harsh safety restrictions, which leads to the ruin of the sacred places [of worship]?

  5. What is our stance on those who say that the governmental leaders in the Land of Tawheed have made decisions during this pandemic based on blindly following the West, without consulting the people of knowledge?
