  1. As-Salaamu ‘alaykum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh

    I checked my workbook for the hadeeth which mentions backbiting (somewhere around number 80), I saw some points which alluded to their being exceptions. There was one point I didn’t see which I have come across elsewhere- regarding the fact that a person describing another person (non-maliciously) also does not fall into backbiting. So examples of describing I can think of are – to identify someone, describe them for marriage or to explain someone’s health issues and symptoms etc. So firstly, is this correct? BaarakAllaahu feek

    In addition there is also this hadeeth- عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَسْبُكَ مِنْ صَفِيَّةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا تَعْنِي قَصِيرَةً فَقَالَ لَقَدْ قُلْتِ كَلِمَةً لَوْ مُزِجَتْ بِمَاءِ الْبَحْرِ لَمَزَجَتْهُ

    Aisha is describing Safiyyah here, but the Messenger rebuked her for what she said. Is there a difference between what Aaishah did and what I have asked about above?

    • Wa ‘alaykum as-Salaamu wa rahmatullaah wa barakaatuh.

      1. Yes, that is correct. Like when the Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) described two of his companions being considered for marriage to Faatimah bint Qays as being “broke, having no money,” and the other as “one who hits women.” (Saheeh Muslim no. 1480)

      2. What is mentioned in the hadeeth of our mother, ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), was rebuke and disapproval from the Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace). This means there was no legitimate angle for it, and thus it falls under the base rule of impermissibility, mentioning about your brother or sister what he/she would dislike. And Allah knows best.
