QUESTION:<\/strong> Is it permissible for a Muslim to give gifts to the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), and is it permissible to give some of the Udhiyah<\/em> sacrifice to someone from the People of the Book?<\/p>\n

ANSWER by the Permanent Committee for Religious Verdicts, headed by Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have Mercy on him):<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is permissible to give gifts or food to a non-Muslim, from the Udhiyah [Sacrifice] or other optional acts of charity, [1] so long as he is not at war with us, [2] due to the Statement of Allah, the Most High:<\/p>\n

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight against you in Religion or expel you from your homelands, that you be kind to them and deal justly with them. Verily, Allah loves the equitable.”<\/strong> [3]<\/p>\n

FOOTNOTES by the Translator:<\/strong><\/p>\n

[1] This indicates that the ruling is different for obligatory acts of charity, like Zakaat al-Maal<\/em> and Zakaat al-Fitr<\/em>. Remember, the ruling on the Udhiyah<\/em> Sacrifice is that it is highly recommended, not obligatory. Therefore, it is categorized as an “optional act of charity”.<\/p>\n

[2] This means when a Muslim country is in a state of openly declared war with another country, the non-Muslims of the country at war are not to receive any charitable acts during that war. It may also include an individual “muhaarib”<\/em>, someone who displays open animosity and contempt for Islam and the Muslims, even while there may not be any openly declared war going on.<\/p>\n
