{"id":4406,"date":"2015-08-16T15:47:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-16T15:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=4406"},"modified":"2015-08-16T15:47:51","modified_gmt":"2015-08-16T15:47:51","slug":"are-a-muslim-womans-non-muslim-relatives-acceptable-as-mahram-for-traveling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/are-a-muslim-womans-non-muslim-relatives-acceptable-as-mahram-for-traveling.htm","title":{"rendered":"Are a Muslim Woman&#8217;s Non-Muslim Relatives Acceptable as Mahram for Traveling?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah, the All Merciful, the Ever Merciful&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As reported by Ibn &#8216;Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) and collected in the most authentic Hadeeth sources like al-Bukhaaree and Muslim, the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) forbade believing women from <strong>traveling<\/strong> without a <em><strong>mahram<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A <em><strong>mahram<\/strong><\/em> is a woman&#8217;s close male family member, like her father, grandfather, son,\u00a0grandson, brother,\u00a0or uncle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traveling<\/strong> means to leave one&#8217;s\u00a0city,\u00a0by a distance considered\u00a0according to\u00a0local customs to be a journey, not just normal daily movement\u00a0around and outside of the borders of one&#8217;s city.<\/p>\n<p>In the West,\u00a0a woman often\u00a0accepts\u00a0Islaam and thereafter faces\u00a0the difficulty of being the only Muslim in\u00a0her family. She may ask: How am I to implement this hadeeth? Since my immediate male relatives are disqualified from being my <strong><em>walee<\/em><\/strong> (guardian) in a marriage contract, are they also disqualified from being my <em><strong>mahram<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0during a journey?<\/p>\n<p>This issue was recently addressed by <strong>Shaykh Muhammad &#8216;Umar Baazmool<\/strong> (may Allaah preserve him),\u00a0Professor of Higher Studies at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah. He is not to have\u00a0mahram status\u00a0if he cannot be trusted around her.
