In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…<\/em><\/p>\n

The great scholar of Islaam, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz<\/strong> [d.1420] -may Allaah have Mercy on him-<\/em> was asked about the methodology of\u00a0propagating Islaam to\u00a0people who have been affected by certain cultures or societies that distort the true meaning of Islaam. He replied:<\/p>\n

The falsehood of the beliefs or culture\u00a0which has affected them\u00a0is to be clarified to them.\u00a0The\u00a0(false) beliefs are clarified as\u00a0involving such-and-such (i.e. naming the specific points of\u00a0misguidance).\u00a0The\u00a0various forms of falsehood and innovation found within such beliefs – if any – are to be clarified. Furthermore, the\u00a0primary reference\u00a0for all affairs is to be clearly identified as the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the Sunnah of His Messenger (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace).<\/p>\n

(It\u00a0is\u00a0said to them) Regarding what you have come across of such-and-such (a specific form of misguidance), what you have learned, like such-and-such, and\/or the manners you have taken from your environment,\u00a0like intermingling, etc., these\u00a0issues must all be weighed\u00a0on the scale of the Sharee’ah\u00a0(divinely revealed Islaamic Legislation), like how the scholars base issues of jurisprudence upon the legislative evidences (of the Book and the Sunnah). Whatever is in line with it (the Sharee’ah) remains, and whatever opposes it must be cast aside, even if it were the known customary practices of one’s parents, forefathers, scholars,\u00a0or anyone else.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0summary,\u00a0it is\u00a0obligatory to\u00a0adhere to the upright manners\u00a0and good standing which\u00a0the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His\u00a0Messenger (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace)\u00a0lead to. We are not to\u00a0have bigotry for our\u00a0fathers, grandfathers, cultures, or homelands. Rather, a person must adhere to the Truth\u00a0proven in the Book of\u00a0Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, the Sunnah of His Messenger (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace), and the consensus of the\u00a0early predecessors of the Ummah.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

IMPORTANT COMMENTARY:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1)<\/strong> The shaykh (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said, “The falsehood of the beliefs or culture that has affected them\u00a0is to be clarified to them.\u00a0The\u00a0(false) beliefs are\u00a0clarified as involving such-and-such…”<\/em>\u00a0This helps us to understand that from the methodology of the Salaf in calling the people of\u00a0misguidance and innovation\u00a0to the correct understanding\u00a0of Islaam is to single out their specific points of confusion and clarify them<\/strong>. It is the da’wah of true concern and sympathy for souls lost in misguidance. It is the da’wah of the Companions, as can be seen from their interactions with the Khawaarij, the Qadariyyah, and other early groups of innovators.<\/p>\n

2)<\/strong> For every misguided belief, there are effective ways to dismantle it directly at its root, known to the scholars and their students. ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas, the prominent scholar of the Companions,\u00a0went to the Khawaarij Cult and addressed their three main points of confusion directly and without any flattery. By Allaah’s Permission,\u00a02,000 of them were guided back to the Truth, and no one could have said, “The Khawaarij must be OK because Ibn ‘Abbaas sat with them.”<\/em> The Salafee Da’wah is clear, not like the da’wah of the\u00a0various ikhwani cults of today. 3)<\/strong> Giving da’wah to the people of innovation\u00a0requires knowledge of Islaam in general, as well as knowledge of their specific forms of misguidance and how to\u00a0respond to them\u00a0with convincing logical and textual arguments\u00a0coupled with good manners. Those unequipped, while often intending only\u00a0good, end up causing more harm than good.<\/p>\n

4)<\/strong>\u00a0Encouraging people of innovation to practice\u00a0Islaam with generally agreeable admonishments\u00a0does not <\/strong>help them.\u00a0This neither qualifies as guidance, nor does it establish\u00a0proof upon anyone.\u00a0Misguided people\u00a0need specific points to be singled out and clarified<\/strong>, not uncontended generalities. Without actualizing this\u00a0priority in da’wah, the image of the\u00a0Religion of Islaam is often harmed,\u00a0as it appears to the\u00a0public that the Muslims are pleased with and in agreement with\u00a0a group of innovators. The severity of the innovation magnifies the damage created by such misguided da’wah attempts. In the end, it only\u00a0serves\u00a0the goal of the innovators looking for some kind of official endorsement or recognition from a recognized Islaamic figure.<\/p>\n

5)<\/strong> Speaking to people of innovation, directly pinpointing their specific misguidance, and calling them away from it\u00a0takes certainty in one’s knowledge, stability, and confidence upon the truth, as well as integrity, courage, and determination.\u00a0It is in fact\u00a0jihaad<\/strong><\/em>. It is not for the ignorant, the feint at heart, nor the politically\u00a0ambitious.<\/p>\n

6)<\/strong> Recent\u00a0violations\u00a0of this essential principle and their compound harmful effects on the image of the Religion, done in the name of\u00a0the Islaamic University of Madeenah and the Prophet’s Masjid (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace),\u00a0are\u00a0clear examples of\u00a0blameworthy neglect.
