{"id":3025,"date":"2013-08-17T05:44:24","date_gmt":"2013-08-17T05:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=3025"},"modified":"2018-04-07T13:33:10","modified_gmt":"2018-04-07T13:33:10","slug":"differences-between-khamr-and-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/differences-between-khamr-and-alcohol.htm","title":{"rendered":"Differences Between \u201cKhamr\u201d and \u201cAlcohol\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Ever Compassionate&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is important to differentiate between <em>&#8220;khamr&#8221;<\/em> (intoxicants) and &#8220;alcohol&#8221;.<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The substance called <strong>&#8220;alcohol&#8221;<\/strong> is of three types:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) That which is deadly, if you consume it you will die or become seriously ill.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0This is considered <strong>&#8220;s<em>umm<\/em>&#8220;<\/strong> (poison) and it is permissible to buy, sell, transport, or use it, but not consume it.\u00a0\u00a0You can use it when found in mouthwash, perfume, bug spray, etc., but not in foods or drinks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) That which intoxicates when consumed,<\/strong> a little of it or a lot, then it considered <em>Khamr<\/em> (intoxicant), and it is not permissible to buy, sell, transport, use, or consume.\u00a0\u00a0The scholarly verdicts\u00a0mentioned <strong><a title=\"The Ruling on Using Alcohol as a Medicine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fatwaislam.com\/fis\/index.cfm?scn=fd&amp;ID=432\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a title=\"The Ruling on using Perfumes which contain a certain amount of Alcohol in order to clean Wounds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fatwaislam.com\/fis\/index.cfm?scn=fd&amp;ID=73\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0refer to this category: <strong><em>khamr<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) That which does not intoxicate no matter<!--more--> how much of it is consumed,<\/strong> then it is not a <strong><em>khamr<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0rather it is <em>halaal<\/em>, like the small amounts of alcohol found in many foods and drinks that we eat every day.\u00a0\u00a0This type is permissible to buy, sell, transport, use, and consume.<\/p>\n<p>So if the type of alcohol used in your medicine or food is type <strong>#3, then you may use and\/or consume it<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0If it is type <strong>#1 or #2, then NO, unless the resulting product has a diluted amount, so small that it does not make the product an intoxicant, even when large amounts are consumed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And Allaah knows best.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><em>[I learned this point from Shaykh Muhammad Baazmool, who relays it from al-&#8216;Allaamah Al-Albaanee, may Allaah have Mercy on them both.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Written by: Moosaa Richardson<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>ST Archives \u2013 Originally Published 03-11-2007<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Ever Compassionate&#8230;
