In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…<\/em><\/p>\n

Some people may feel it is inappropriate to attend a class about Islaam\u00a0while performing i’tikaaf<\/em> (seclusion in the masjid), which is commonly done in the last ten nights of Ramadhaan.<\/p>\n

Our shaykh, the great scholar, Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen<\/strong> (may Allaah have Mercy on him) posed and answered the following question:<\/p>\n

\u00a0Does it go against the spirit of i’tikaaf\u00a0<\/em>to occupy oneself with seeking knowledge?<\/p>\n

The answer:<\/strong> No doubt that seeking knowledge is an act of\u00a0obedience\u00a0to Allaah. However,\u00a0i’tikaaf<\/em> has more to do with\u00a0specific acts\u00a0of obdedience, such as prayer, remembrance, recitation of Quran, etc. There is no problem if the one performing i’tikaaf<\/em> attends a lesson or two during the day or night,\u00a0as this does not affect the (validity of)\u00a0i’tikaaf<\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, if the\u00a0classes are continuous, and he begins\u00a0reviewing (and focusing heavily on)\u00a0his lessons,\u00a0attending many sittings that distract\u00a0him from\u00a0his (more) personal\u00a0acts of (private) worship, then no doubt, his i’tikaaf<\/em> would be deficient. However, I do not hold that this invalidates his i’tikaaf.<\/em><\/p>\n
