{"id":2595,"date":"2013-03-17T10:31:09","date_gmt":"2013-03-17T10:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=2595"},"modified":"2013-06-22T05:09:27","modified_gmt":"2013-06-22T05:09:27","slug":"did-imam-al-bukhari-say-my-recitation-of-the-quran-is-created","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/did-imam-al-bukhari-say-my-recitation-of-the-quran-is-created.htm","title":{"rendered":"Did Imam Al-Bukhari say &#8220;My Recitation of the Quran is Created&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah, the All-Merciful, the Ever Merciful&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0phrase of disbelief and one of the slogans that\u00a0identify\u00a0<strong>the Laf-thiyyah Cult<\/strong> from the offshoots of the disbelieving <strong>Jahmiyyah Sect\u00a0<\/strong>was attributed to the greatest scholar of Hadeeth in the history of Islaam, <strong>al-Imaam Muhammad ibn Ismaa&#8217;eel al-Bukhaaree<\/strong> (d.256), may Allaah have Mercy on him.\u00a0 This short phrase was attributed to him:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0644\u0641\u0638\u064a \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0642\u0631\u0622\u0646 \u0645\u062e\u0644\u0648\u0642<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>&#8220;My recitation of the Quran is created.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the scholars of Islam, anyone who held this belief was considered a disbeliever, speaking with one of the distinguishing traits of\u00a0the Laf-thiyyah Cult, who were considered far more dangerous than the original Jahmiyyah disbelievers.<\/p>\n<p>The great imaam, <strong>Abul-Qaasim al-Laalakaa&#8217;ee<\/strong> (d.418), listed the names of the scholars who were reported to have declared those who say &#8220;My recitation of the Quran is created&#8221; to be disbelievers. He listed <strong>over\u00a050 scholars<\/strong>, including:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ash-Shaafi&#8217;ee<\/li>\n<li>Ahmad ibn Hanbal<\/li>\n<li>Is-haaq ibn Raahawayh<\/li>\n<li>Aboo &#8216;Ubayd al-Qaasim ibn Sallaam<\/li>\n<li>Aboo Thowr Ibraaheem ibn Khaalid al-Kalbee<\/li>\n<li>Muhammad ibn Bash-shaar<\/li>\n<li>Muhammad ibn Yahyaa ath-Thuhlee<\/li>\n<li>Ahmad ibn Sa&#8217;eed ad-Daarimee<\/li>\n<li>Aboo Zur&#8217;ah ar-Raazee<\/li>\n<li>Aboo Haatim ar-Raazee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <em>Sharh Usool Ali&#8217;tiqaad<\/em> (2\/385-390) of al-Laalakaa&#8217;ee.<\/p>\n<p>This accusation spread far and wide in the lifetime of al-Imaam al-Bukhaaree, leading\u00a0the governors of various lands to banish him or deny him entry!\u00a0 Some great scholars of that time\u00a0even declared al-Imaam al-Bukhaaree to be an innovator based on that statement.\u00a0 <em>So we need to know: <strong>Did al-Imaam al-Bukhaaree actually say it?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The answer is quite simple:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NO<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>It began as<strong> a false accusation<\/strong> based on assumptions, originating from a\u00a0contemporary of Imaam al-Bukhaaree who had become jealous.\u00a0 Al-Bukhaaree\u00a0was actually asked about the phrase <em>&#8220;My recitation of the Quran is created&#8221;<\/em> directly, and he masterfully dissected the loaded phrase into its two components, the\u00a0Quran being the Speech of Allaah, and the\u00a0human action of\u00a0recitation.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4MHrjB6gdUg\" target=\"_blank\">(Refer to this video for the correct methodology of handling\u00a0issues like this.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People misunderstood this and claimed that al-Bukhaaree agreed with the Laf-thiyyah Cult,\u00a0after which\u00a0great turmoil ensued.\u00a0\u00a0In the midst of this turmoil, Imaam al-Bukhaaree began to face\u00a0further accusations based on\u00a0even more incorrect assumptions about his\u00a0answer. I say as Allaah has said: &#8220;By at-Toor (Mountain), and\u00a0by a written book (the Quran).&#8221; I say that what is in the mus-hafs is the Quran and what is in the people&#8217;s chests is the Quran.\u00a0 Whoever says other than this must be made to repent.\u00a0 If he repents (then leave him), otherwise he is to be\u00a0dealt with as someone who has disbelieved.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <em>Sharh Usool Ali&#8217;tiqaad<\/em> (2\/395-396) of al-Laalakaa&#8217;ee.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars came to him to verify the statements being spread about him.\u00a0He would say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0645\u0646 \u0632\u0639\u0645 \u0645\u0646 \u0623\u0647\u0644 \u0646\u064a\u0633\u0627\u0628\u0648\u0631 _ \u0648\u0630\u0643\u0631 \u0628\u0644\u0627\u062f\u064b\u0627 _ \u0623\u0646\u064a \u0642\u0644\u062a \u0644\u0641\u0638\u064a \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0642\u0631\u0622\u0646 \u0645\u062e\u0644\u0648\u0642 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u0641\u0647\u0648 \u0643\u0630\u0627\u0628<\/span> \u0641\u0625\u0646\u064a \u0644\u0645 \u0623\u0642\u0644 \u0647\u0630\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0629\u060c \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0623\u0646\u064a \u0642\u0644\u062a \u0623\u0641\u0639\u0627\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0628\u0627\u062f \u0645\u062e\u0644\u0648\u0642\u0629.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>&#8220;Whoever from Naysaaboor (and he named many cities) assumes that I have said that my recitation of the Quran is created is<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> a liar<\/span>, as I have not said that.\u00a0 I merely said: The people&#8217;s actions are created.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <em>Sharh Usool Ali&#8217;tiqaad<\/em> (2\/396-397) of al-Laalakaa&#8217;ee.<\/p>\n<p>The great modern scholar and critic, Shaykh <strong>Rabee&#8217; while he was innocent of that, as innocent as can be!\u00a0 He said: &#8220;Whoever said that about me, no matter who\u00a0or where he may be, from the Hijaaz (Makkah, Madeenah) or anywhere else, has lied upon me.\u00a0 I did not say it.&#8221;\u00a0 It is even reported that he said: &#8220;Whoever says that the recitation of the Quran is created is a disbeliever!&#8221;\u00a0 They slandered this imaam (may Allaah have Mercy on him).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <em>Q&amp;A About &#8216;Aqeedah and Manhaj<\/em> (Part 3), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rabee.net\/show_book.aspx?pid=5&amp;bid=217&amp;gid=\" target=\"_blank\">available here (in Arabic).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So as you can see from the mouth of the great imaam himself, he simply did not say what\u00a0he was accused of saying.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>It was only the\u00a0false accusation of a\u00a0contemporary overtaken by jealousy.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Even though it had some impact\u00a0in its time, it died out, because the scholars\u00a0of Islam\u00a0recognized it for what it was.\u00a0 Today, the name of al-Bukhaaree is a household name, and the name of the scholar\u00a0who accused him is\u00a0one that\u00a0most people have never heard of (may Allaah forgive him).<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that &#8211; <em>even today<\/em> &#8211; some people with agendas may try to revive this 1000+ year old falsehood against Imaam al-Bukhaaree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The enemies of Islaam<\/strong> revive this accusation\u00a0to nullify, weaken, or question\u00a0the solid academic foundations of Islaam, the Quran and the Hadeeth.\u00a0 To consider al-Bukhaaree astray would lead to people doubting and abandoning his staple hadeeth collection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The enemies of the Sunnah<\/strong>, even while they may claim to be Muslims, also seek to revive this accusation.\u00a0 This includes those called the &#8220;Qur&#8217;aaniyyoon&#8221; who claim to follow only the Quran, as well as those who follow the\u00a0Shiite Religion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The enemies of the correct beliefs of <em>Ahlus-Sunnah\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>also try to revive this ancient slander, like the Jahmiyyah, the Ash&#8217;arees, the Mu&#8217;tazilah, and others.\u00a0 If they can lead some of the Muslims into doubting the correctness of the beliefs of the greatest imaams of the righteous Salaf, like Imaam al-Bukhaaree, then this would open the door for lenience and even acceptability for\u00a0their innovated beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>One example of the modern day\u00a0Ash&#8217;arees doing this would be the footnotes of Shu&#8217;ayb al-Arna&#8217;oot and his team of researchers who commented on <em>Siyar A&#8217;laam an-Nubalaa&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>(12\/458-459) of ath-Thahabee.\u00a0 While the text of the book\u00a0explicitly rejects this accusation against al-Bukhaaree\u00a0and discredits it, the researchers actually\u00a0try to justify and affirm it in their commentary!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fanatic followers of today&#8217;s &#8220;Islamic&#8221; personalities<\/strong> may also attempt to revive this accusation against al-Bukhaaree.\u00a0 More than one instance of this has appeared in the responses of the followers of Yusuf Estes to the public corrections of the ancient Jahmiyyah that he has been spreading.\u00a0\u00a0The extreme<em> ghuluw<\/em> (fanatacism)\u00a0for him and those like him\u00a0will allow\u00a0some people to\u00a0try and throw the imaams of Islaam under the bus, so long as Yusuf Estes does not come out looking that bad!\u00a0 This is why this issue is extremely relevant to our times, and\u00a0not an issue of the past being dug up for no reason.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u00a0a mistranslation (or omission) in a recent publication, <strong><em>&#8220;The Biography of Imam\u00a0Bukhaaree&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (Darussalam, 2005), may\u00a0lead some readers\u00a0to think that perhaps al-Bukhaaree did actually say &#8220;My recitation of the Quran is created&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0At the top of p.175 where it says that he denied ever saying, &#8220;The Quran is created,&#8221; it should read, &#8220;My recitation of the Quran is created.&#8221;\u00a0 This correction is based on the quoted\u00a0sources in\u00a0the footnotes, and it clarifies\u00a0that al-Bukhaaree specifically negated this accusation.\u00a0 Without this correction, readers of the book may be left to some unbefitting conclusions about the beliefs of\u00a0Imaam al-Bukhaaree.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, if you find people today still\u00a0trying to accuse the great imaam of the Muslims, Imaam Muhammad ibn Ismaa&#8217;eel al-Bukhaaree (may Allaah have Mercy on him), of having a major mistake in his creed like this, then stand up for him confidently, saying what al-Bukhaaree said himself:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Whoever\u00a0claims\u00a0such a thing\u00a0is a liar!<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>And Allaah knows best.<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by: Moosaa Richardson<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Name of Allaah, the All-Merciful, the Ever Merciful&#8230;
