{"id":2512,"date":"2013-01-13T11:55:25","date_gmt":"2013-01-13T11:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=2512"},"modified":"2013-01-13T12:03:12","modified_gmt":"2013-01-13T12:03:12","slug":"hadeeth-study-only-allaah-punishes-with-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/hadeeth-study-only-allaah-punishes-with-fire.htm","title":{"rendered":"Hadeeth Study: Only Allaah Punishes With Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Perfect Name of Allaah&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Aboo Daawood (may Allaah have Mercy on him) collected three hadeeths in a chapter of his <em>Sunan<\/em>\u00a0called <em>&#8220;The Detestable Nature of Burning the Opposing Forces (in Military Confrontation) With Fire.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first two hadeeths narrated by Aboo Hamzah al-Aslamee (#2673)\u00a0and Aboo Hurayrah (#2674) &#8211; may Allaah be pleased with them &#8211; include the following\u00a0clear prohibition:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0644\u0627 \u064a\u0639\u0630\u0628 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0631 \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0631\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0631<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;No one may punish using fire other than the Lord of the Fire (Allaah).&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third hadeeth narrated by &#8216;Abdullaah ibn Mas&#8217;ood (#2675) &#8211; may Allaah be pleased with him &#8211;\u00a0includes<!--more--> the wording:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0625\u0646\u0647 \u0644\u0627 \u064a\u0646\u0628\u063a\u064a \u0623\u0646 \u064a\u0639\u0630\u0628 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0631 \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0631\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0631<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;It is not befitting for anyone to punish using fire, other than the Lord of the Fire (Allaah).&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All three hadeeths were classified as <em>&#8220;saheeh&#8221;<\/em> (authentic) by Shaykh Al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him)\u00a0in his checking of the <em>Sunan<\/em>.\u00a0 In <em>Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah<\/em> (#487), he adds a discussion of the authentic narration of when &#8216;Alee, the fourth Caliph of the Muslims, ordered some people to\u00a0face the death penalty by fire.\u00a0 When news of this reached Ibn &#8216;Abbaas, he disapproved\u00a0of the decision and relayed\u00a0a hadeeth\u00a0of the\u00a0Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace)\u00a0with a similar wording:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0644\u0627 \u062a\u0639\u0630\u0628\u0648\u0627 \u0628\u0639\u0630\u0627\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Do not punish with the punishment of Allaah!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was collected by Imaam\u00a0al-Bukhaaree in his<em> Saheeh<\/em> (#3017).<\/p>\n<p>Imaam at-Tirmithee\u00a0also collected it in his<em> Jaami&#8217;<\/em> (#1458), adding that when this comment got back to &#8216;Alee, he said,<em> &#8220;Ibn &#8216;Abbaas has spoken correctly.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT BENEFITS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>[1]<\/strong> The\u00a0narrations clearly prove the impermissibility of harming or killing people with fire,\u00a0in both wars and\u00a0punishments for crimes, as understood and narrated by at least\u00a0four of the Companions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[2]<\/strong> Allaah is the only One who has the right to punish\u00a0anyone with fire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[3]<\/strong> The Hellfire is a created thing, created by Allaah and prepared as a punishment for the disbelievers and the sinful.\u00a0 Since Allaah created the Fire, he is referred to as the &#8220;Lord of the Fire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>[4]<\/strong> Allaah&#8217;s Legislation is all-inclusive and governs all our interactions.\u00a0 While it is permissible to kill harmful insects in general, it is not permissible to burn them, as the hadeeth of Ibn Mas&#8217;ood was narrated when the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) noticed an anthill that had been burned down.\u00a0 He showed concern for it and forbade his Companions from killing ants by fire.\u00a0 He (may Allaah raise his rank and grant hiim peace) was indeed a Mercy to all of the creation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2524 alignright\" title=\"electric-mosquito-racket\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/electric-mosquito-racket.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"286\" \/>[5]<\/strong> Some scholars consider electricity to be a manifestation of fire, or close enough to it to share its ruling.\u00a0 Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him)\u00a0issued a <em>fatwaa<\/em> (religious verdict)\u00a0that it is not permissible to kill mosquitos and other insects with modern devices that burn them with electricity, due to these hadeeths. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.binbaz.org.sa\/mat\/17716\" target=\"_blank\">[Arabic source]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>[6]<\/strong> In another hadeeth in the <em>Saheeh<\/em> hadeeth collections\u00a0of Imaams\u00a0al-Bukhaaree (#2240) and Muslim (#651), the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) considered burning down the houses of the (capable, unexcused) men who refrained from attending congregational prayers.\u00a0\u00a0Scholars\u00a0mention that the reasons for\u00a0not implementing this\u00a0include the presence of women and children in the homes, as well as <strong>the prohibition of punishing with fire<\/strong>. (Review: <em>al-Bahr al-Muheet ath-Thajjaaj<\/em> (14\/218-229)\u00a0of Shaykh Muhammad ibn &#8216;Alee ibn Aadam al-Ityoobee)<\/p>\n<p>While some scholars consider the mention of burning the homes to be abrogated,\u00a0this seems incorrect, since it was never actually implemented.\u00a0 The scholars of <em>Usool al-Fiqh<\/em> have mentioned that\u00a0an abrogated ruling is one that\u00a0was acted upon\u00a0at least for a short time, and Allaah knows best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[7]<\/strong> Since it it not permissible to punish with fire, then it is also impermissible to physically threaten someone with actual fire (or electricity),\u00a0or by pointing\u00a0a device that produces actual fire (or electricity).\u00a0 Once a matter is prohibited, then actions that typically lead to that matter are also prohibited.\u00a0 The Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0\u0644\u0627 \u064a\u0634\u064a\u0631 \u0623\u062d\u062f\u0643\u0645 \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0623\u062e\u064a\u0647 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u062d \u0641\u0625\u0646\u0647 \u0644\u0627 \u064a\u062f\u0631\u064a \u0644\u0639\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u064a\u0637\u0627\u0646 \u064a\u0646\u0632\u063a \u0641\u064a \u064a\u062f\u0647 \u0641\u064a\u0642\u0639 \u0641\u064a \u062d\u0641\u0631\u0629 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0631<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(( One of you may not point a weapon at his brother, since he does not know that the Shaytaan might\u00a0affect his hand <\/strong>(and cause him to actually strike his brother)<strong>, and then he would land in a pit of Fire. ))\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong><em> Al-Bukhaaree (#7072) and Muslim (#2617)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>[8]<\/strong> There is also\u00a0further proof for the\u00a0lofty character and humbleness of &#8216;Alee ibn Abee Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him), who accepted Ibn &#8216;Abbaas&#8217; position as being correct, after making a mistake in the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[9]<\/strong> The Religion of Allaah is about\u00a0correct beliefs and actions.\u00a0 Mistakes are to be identified and dealt with based on evidences from the Book and the Sunnah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[10]<\/strong> The Companions would correct one another when they erred.\u00a0 They were all great people who accepted corrections, returning their affairs back to the evidences of the Quran and Sunnah,\u00a0wonderful\u00a0examples of followers of the truth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[11]<\/strong> Mistaken actions done by the Muslim leaders are to be corrected by people of knowledge and concern in a way that does not cause\u00a0dissention nor create any strife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[12] <\/strong>The event also shows the\u00a0strength\u00a0of Ibn &#8216;Abbaas&#8217; religious understanding\u00a0(may Allaah be pleased with him).\u00a0 He was one of the greatest scholars of fiqh and tafseer, an amazing resource of knowledge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Perfect Name of Allaah&#8230;
