{"id":2432,"date":"2012-11-02T11:33:31","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T11:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=2432"},"modified":"2012-11-05T14:15:54","modified_gmt":"2012-11-05T14:15:54","slug":"shaykh-ibn-baaz-on-the-kufr-apostasy-of-illusionary-magicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/shaykh-ibn-baaz-on-the-kufr-apostasy-of-illusionary-magicians.htm","title":{"rendered":"Shaykh Ibn Baaz on the Kufr (Apostasy) of Illusionary Magicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The great scholar, the late Muftee of Saudi Arabia and head of their permanent council of scholars, <strong>Shaykh &#8216;Abdul-&#8216;Azeez ibn Baaz<\/strong> (d.1420, may Allaah have Mercy on him), commented on a seminar about magicians and religious swindlers held in 1415.\u00a0 After acknowledging the accuracy of their speeches on the topics of witchcraft, the practice of sorcery and its reality, and other topics, the shaykh noted that they had not discussed <strong>illusionary magic<\/strong>, and felt the need to add the following clarification:<\/p>\n<p>Their magic could also be illusionary, and the shaykhs did not discuss illusionary magic.\u00a0 Allaah has clearly mentioned that they could also perform illusionary tricks on people, as He, the Glorious and Most High, said in<!--more--> <em>Soorah Taa-Haa<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u064a\u062e\u064a\u0644 \u0625\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0645\u0646 \u0633\u062d\u0631\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u0646\u0647\u0627 \u062a\u0633\u0639\u0649<br \/>\n( And it was made to seem from their magic that they were moving ) <\/strong>[20:66]<\/p>\n<p>So they would make the people think that the ropes they threw down were actually snakes moving about. Similarly, the sticks also appeared to the people to be snakes, while this was merely an illusionary trick on the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>So when Moosaa (Moses) threw his staff down, it devoured them, doing away with their ropes and sticks.\u00a0 When the magicians saw this, they fell down in prostration as believers in what Moosaa (Moses) had come with (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace). They paid no attention thereafter to the threats of Fir&#8217;own (Pharoah):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0648\u0627 \u0644\u0646 \u0646\u0624\u062b\u0631\u0643 \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0645\u0627 \u062c\u0627\u0621\u0646\u0627 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u0646\u0627\u062a \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0630\u064a \u0641\u0637\u0631\u0646\u0627 \u0641\u0627\u0642\u0636 \u0645\u0627 \u0623\u0646\u062a \u0642\u0627\u0636 \u0625\u0646\u0645\u0627 \u062a\u0642\u0636\u064a \u0647\u0630\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064a\u0627\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0646\u064a\u0627 \u0625\u0646\u0627 \u0622\u0645\u0646\u0627 \u0628\u0631\u0628\u0646\u0627 \u0644\u064a\u063a\u0641\u0631 \u0644\u0646\u0627 \u062e\u0637\u0627\u064a\u0627\u0646\u0627 \u0648\u0645\u0627 \u0623\u0643\u0631\u0647\u062a\u0646\u0627 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u062d\u0631 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u062e\u064a\u0631 \u0648\u0623\u0628\u0642\u0649<br \/>\n( They said, &#8220;We would not prefer you over the clear proofs that have reached us, nor over the One who created us.\u00a0 Judge however you will, your judgment is only for this worldly life.\u00a0 Verily we have believed in our Lord, so that He might forgive our mistakes and the magic you forced us to perform, as <\/strong>(the reward from)<strong> Allaah is better and more lasting.&#8221; )<\/strong> [20:72-73]<\/p>\n<p>What I mean is that magicians could use things to change the apparent reality, by the Permission of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic.\u00a0 Any number of things (could be used): foods, drinks (potions), or something else.<\/p>\n<p>They could also create illusions that lead someone to think things are not really the way they are, like an illusion that convinces someone that a rope or a stick becomes a slithering snake.<\/p>\n<p>It could also be made to seem that some birds, snakes, or scorpions have come out of his body, while that did not really happen, rather it was all just an illusion.\u00a0 He tricks someone through the illusionary magic he does.<\/p>\n<p>Another kind of illusionary magic is when they trick a man into thinking that his wife is ugly, and so he hates and despises her; or the wife is convinced that her husband is ugly when he approaches her, and so she despises him.<\/p>\n<p>There are other examples of what they do, and <strong>it is all <em>kufr<\/em> (apostasy), all of their magic is<em> kufr<\/em>, whether it is done through Satanic acts that harm the people, or through illusions<\/strong>, causing people to see things for other than what they really are &#8211; a man is convinced he looks like a hideous animal, or that a woman&#8217;s husband has turned black after he had been white, or that he is diseased or other things that a man is made to believe about his wife, from the work of magicians, and thus it causes hatred, animosity, and splitting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> Shaykh Ibn Baaz&#8217;s Fatwaa Collection (8\/105) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alifta.org.sa\/Fatawa\/FatawaChapters.aspx?View=Page&amp;PageID=990&amp;PageNo=1&amp;BookID=4\" target=\"_blank\">[Click here for the Arabic source.]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compare the words of Shaykh Ibn Baaz above to the words of the magician of Almaghrib Institute, <strong>Kamal el-Mekki<\/strong> (may Allah guide him), as he complains about the people who don&#8217;t understand his opinion that illusionary magic is perfectly permissible:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, if you watch Dynamo, Criss Angel, or\u2026 Oh! Muslims talk about, \u201cI don\u2019t watch them cause they use jinn.\u201d And they don\u2019t use jinn. I can show you every one of their tricks, how they do it, and every one of them has an explanation, yeah?<\/p>\n<p>So, but, and one talent show I was going to do some sleight of hand tricks, but someone already came up and objected, (deep mocking voice), \u201cOh, magic on stage!\u201d So, khalaas (that was over).<\/p>\n<p>So, we tell people that what\u2019s haraam is sorcery, yeah? So, if you go to a magician\u2019s show, they\u2019re just doing illusions on stage, there\u2019s nothing haraam (impermissible) about that.<\/p>\n<p>Now, so what you\u2019re not allowed to go to \u2013 to a black magician, yeah? That\u2019s what\u2019s haraam (impermissible). Now I don\u2019t mean a \u201cblack\u201d magician (gesturing to his skin color), ya\u2019nee, I mean\u2026 (laughs) a magician who uses jinn and stuff&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Kamal-el-Mekki-on-Illusionary-Magic-at-Green-Lane-Masjid-UK.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">An interview with Kamal el-Mekki at Green Lane Masjid (transcript)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Videos of <strong>Kamal el-Mekki<\/strong> performing magic tricks, even <em><strong>&#8220;levitation&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, can be found on YouTube, as well as other words of his defending and promoting his opinion.\u00a0 We do not advise anyone to seek them out, except for those who have decision making roles in Muslim communities and they want to uphold the trust on their shoulders by preventing him from coming to their community by warning the people from him.\u00a0 In such a case, when verification is needed to prevent the spread of evil, only then should someone watch those videos.
