In the Name of Allaah, the Most\u00a0Compassionate, the Ever-Merciful…<\/em><\/p>\n

Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz<\/strong> (d.1420 – may Allaah have Mercy on him) was asked the following question about Janaazah<\/em> (Funeral)\u00a0Prayer\u00a0in absentia:<\/p>\n

If someone learns of a relative who passed away in another land, should he perform Janaazah<\/em> Prayer for that person (in absentia)?<\/p>\n

No, rather he should ask Allaah for Forgiveness (for the deceased), since the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) did not use to pray (Janaazah) over the deceased from other lands,\u00a0except for special cases.\u00a0 An example of this\u00a0was when the Prophet prayed over An-Najaashee (the King of Abyssinia), because of his\u00a0special status\u00a0connected to the invitation to (the Religion of) Allaah.\u00a0 He used to\u00a0receive and honor\u00a0the Muslim emigrants who came to him kindly.<\/p>\n

So if the deceased\u00a0was of a special status, like a righteous leader or scholar, or someone similar, then there is no harm in praying Salaat Al-Ghaa’ib (Janaazah Prayer in absentia)\u00a0for him.<\/p>\n

We should not pray Salaat\u00a0al-Ghaa’ib over\u00a0everyday people, since a large number of people (Companions) died in Makkah and elsewhere,\u00a0while the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him and his family\u00a0peace) did not perform Salaat al-Ghaa’ib\u00a0for them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
