In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…<\/em><\/p>\n

Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Umar Baazmool<\/a><\/strong> (may Allaah preserve him) was asked: Our shaykh!\u00a0 It has been reported that Faatimah \u2013 may Allaah be pleased with her \u2013 used to give charity (in silver) equal to the weight of her newborn\u2019s hair after shaving it on the seventh day.\u00a0 Is that a Sunnah she got from the Prophet \u2013 may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace \u2013 or was it her own preferred way of giving (optional) charity?\u00a0 May Allaah reward you and bless your time and deeds.<\/p>\n

He answered:<\/p>\n

Yes, what seems correct is that it was a Sunnah<\/em> she learned from the Messenger \u2013 may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace \u2013 to give the weight of the newborn\u2019s (shaven) hair in silver.\u00a0 Al-Albaanee alluded to this in al-Irwaa<\/em> when he traced the sources of the narrations about the \u2018Aqeeqah<\/em>, saying that it reaches the level of being hasan<\/em> by supporting routes.\u00a0 Furthermore, the narrations give this impression:<\/p>\n

Maalik narrated in his Muwatta\u2019<\/em>, from Ja\u2019far ibn Muhammad, who narrated that his father said that Faatimah weighed the hair of Hasan, Husayn, Zaynab, and Umm Kulthoom, and then gave its weight in silver in charity.<\/p>\n

Also in the Muwatta\u2019<\/em> is the report of Rabee\u2019ah ibn Abee \u2018Abdir-Rahmaan, who narrated from Muhammad ibn \u2018Alee ibn Husayn, that Faatimah weighed the hair of Hasan and Husayn, and then gave the weight (of the hair) in silver in charity.<\/p>\n

And Yahyaa ibn Bukayr said: Ibn Lahee\u2019ah narrated to me that \u2018Umaarah ibn Aziyyah narrated from Rabee\u2019ah ibn Abee \u2018Abdir-Rahmaan, from Anas ibn Maalik, that the Messenger of Allaah ordered the heads of Hasan and Husayn on their seventh days to be shaved and the weight of it (the hair) in silver be given in charity.<\/p>\n

And \u2018Abdur-Razzaaq said: Ibn Jurayj reported that he heard Muhammad ibn \u2018Alee saying: Faatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allaah, did not used to have a newborn except that she ordered the head to be shaved and the weight of it in silver to be given in charity.<\/p>\n
