In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful…<\/em><\/p>\n

The great scholar, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz<\/strong> (d.1420), may Allaah have Mercy on him, was asked: [1]<\/p>\n

What is the meaning of the disbelief mentioned in the hadeeth, “A man will wake up as a believer,\u00a0and\u00a0be a disbeliever by nightfall; and a man will go to bed as a believer and wake up as a disbeliever, selling out\u00a0his religion for some small worldly commodity”?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 And\u00a0what is meant by “selling out his religion”<\/strong><\/span>?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

HIS ANSWER:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has been authentically established that he (the Prophet, may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) said,\u00a0as part of\u00a0a long hadeeth:<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Rush to perform (good) deeds now, before fitan (trials and tribulations) of pitch-black darkness (appear), wherein a man wakes up as a believer and becomes a disbeliever by nightfall, and another man goes to bed as a believer and wakes up as a disbeliever, selling his Religion for some worldly commodities.”<\/strong> [2]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This means that the strangeness of Islaam will increase to a point where a believer wakes up as a Muslim and becomes a disbeliever by nightfall, or the opposite – he goes to bed as a believer and wakes up as a disbeliever, by selling out his Religion for some worldly commodity, by speaking with words of disbelief or behaving with actions of disbelief for the sake of some worldly gains.\u00a0 He begins his day as a believer, and then someone comes to him requesting him to speak ill of Allaah and the Messenger, or to stop praying, offering him something (a raise, a promotion, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“Consider fornication or alcohol to be permissible,”<\/em> (they say,) “And we’ll give you such and such,”<\/em> to make\u00a0him join the disbelievers.\u00a0 They convince him to be amongst the disbelievers, in their (political) party, among their supporters, giving him large amounts of money to be the disbelievers’\u00a0ally and an enemy of the Muslims.<\/p>\n

There are many, many\u00a0different kinds of apostacy.\u00a0 It\u00a0usually\u00a0occurs for some worldly reason,\u00a0loving this world (too much) and preferring it over the Next Life.\u00a0 This is why he said:<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span>“He sells out his Religion for some worldly commodity”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Rush to perform good deeds now!\u00a0 Are you waiting for crippling\u00a0poverty? Or\u00a0riches that spoil and corrupt you?\u00a0 Or\u00a0unexpected death?\u00a0 Or debilitating illness?\u00a0 Or hopeless senility?\u00a0 Or the <\/strong><\/span>Dajjaal<\/em> (the\u00a0Lying Anti-Christ)?\u00a0 The Dajjaal<\/em> is a hidden evil waiting to appear!\u00a0 Or the Hour (the Day of Judgment)?\u00a0\u00a0The Hour is\u00a0more grievous and most bitter!”<\/strong><\/span>[3]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A true believer hastens to perform (good) deeds, and he worries that he could be tried by unexpected death, dying by total surprise, or that he be afflicted\u00a0by a disease that\u00a0takes his strength\u00a0so he can not do anything.\u00a0\u00a0He worries that he could be afflicted with senility or other things, so he takes advantage of his life, good health, and sound intellect by performing good deeds before he is prevented from doing them by those things,\u00a0things he could be tried with, like illness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes (apostacy can occur) by\u00a0seeking\u00a0worldly things and loving this world (too much), preferring it over the Next Life, preferring its (deceptive)\u00a0decorations placed there by the enemies of Allaah and the missionaries of disbelief and misguidance.<\/span><\/p>\n
