{"id":1769,"date":"2011-11-16T17:31:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-16T17:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/?p=1769"},"modified":"2012-08-03T20:27:30","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T20:27:30","slug":"three-points-about-joking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/three-points-about-joking.htm","title":{"rendered":"Three Points about Joking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let us be reminded that while light-hearted, honest joking from time to time is permissible,\u00a0there are indeed\u00a0dangers in joking that many of us may not think about\u00a0and therefore fall into, so let us be warned about them:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>1) JOKES INVOLVING LIES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indeed the Prophet (<em>sallallaahu &#8216;alayhe wa sallam<\/em>) warned us severely against using lies in our joking, with his statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0648\u064a\u0644 \u0644\u0644\u0630\u064a \u064a\u062d\u062f\u062b \u0628\u0627\u0644\u062d\u062f\u064a\u062b \u0644\u064a\u0636\u062d\u0643 \u0628\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0642\u0648\u0645 \u0641\u064a\u0643\u0630\u0628\u060c \u0648\u064a\u0644 \u0644\u0647\u060c \u0648\u064a\u0644 \u0644\u0647<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Woe to\u00a0the one who lies to make people laugh, WOE TO HIM, WOE TO HIM!&#8221;<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an authenitc hadeeth found in Sunan Abee Daawood (#4990), At-Tirmithee (#2315), and others.\u00a0 At-Tirmithee called the hadeeth hasan, and Al-Albaanee agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Someone may say,<em> &#8220;Well, its obvious this joke is full of lies, but I&#8217;m not the one who made\u00a0it up, I&#8217;m just passing it on.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The reply:<\/strong> The hadeeth of the Prophet (<em>sallallaahu &#8216;alayhe wa sallam<\/em>) that Imaam Muslim brings in the introduction to his Saheeh could apply here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0643\u0641\u0649 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0631\u0621 \u0643\u0630\u0628\u064b\u0627 \u0623\u0646 \u064a\u062d\u062f\u062b \u0628\u0643\u0644 \u0645\u0627 \u0633\u0645\u0639<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;It is sufficient for a man to be considered\u00a0a liar\u00a0when he relays everything he hears.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lies in general are impermissible, in joking or outside of joking.\u00a0\u00a0There are three exceptions to the general prohibition of lying in Islaam:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Between spouses<\/li>\n<li>To correct a broken relationship<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0established military operations\u00a0(jihad) under a Muslim government<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even\u00a0in these three cases it must only be used to bring about a benefit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The point is <\/strong>that\u00a0none of the scholars\u00a0exempted joking as a permissible form of lying.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>2) EXCESSIVE JOKING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Prophet (<em>sallallaahu &#8216;alayhe wa sallam<\/em>) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0644\u0627 \u062a\u0643\u062b\u0631\u0648\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0636\u062d\u0643\u060c \u0641\u0625\u0646 \u0643\u062b\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0636\u062d\u0643 \u062a\u0645\u064a\u062a \u0627\u0644\u0642\u0644\u0628<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t laugh too much! For verily, excessive laughter kills the heart!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an authentic hadeeth found in Sunan Ibn Maajah (#4193).\u00a0 Refer to <em>Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah<\/em> (#506).<\/p>\n<p>And he (<em>sallallaahu &#8216;alayhe wa sallam<\/em>) also said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u064a\u0627 \u0623\u0645\u0629 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f! \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0644\u0648 \u062a\u0639\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u0645\u0627 \u0623\u0639\u0644\u0645\u00a0\u0644\u0636\u062d\u0643\u062a\u0645 \u0642\u0644\u064a\u0644\u0627 \u0648\u0644\u0628\u0643\u064a\u062a\u0645 \u0643\u062b\u064a\u0631\u0627<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;O Nation of Muhammad! By Allaah,\u00a0if you knew what I know, you would laugh\u00a0little and cry much.&#8221; <\/strong>[Al-Bukhaaree &amp; Muslim]<\/p>\n<p>So the Muslim\u00a0who recognizes his priorities in life\u00a0does not get caught up in excessive joking, for example, joke books or\u00a0comedy programs on TV or radio, since these things will only weaken his heart, keep it away from\u00a0Allaah&#8217;s remembrance, or even kill it, and Allaah&#8217;s refuge is sought.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>3) INSULTING PEOPLE IN JEST (Satire, Sarcasm, Roasting, etc.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The disbelievers have a custom of intentionally insulting a person to honor him (?!), they call it a &#8220;roast.&#8221; They gather the best comedians\u00a0together to humiliate their &#8220;honoree&#8221; on his 50th birthday, or his retirement party, or other big occasion. And from their customs as well is to jokingly insult a friend, out of love or respect (?!), as\u00a0you may have\u00a0seen.<\/p>\n<p>They might say, <em>&#8220;This is my friend, Fulaan, the fat pig,&#8221;<\/em> and they all laugh, or, <em>&#8220;My wife, the old ball and chain&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> or other derogatory terms that are actually words of insult in their origin. They only spark hatred and do not achieve any goodness, so the Muslim must be the furthest away from this kind of action. The Prophet (<em>sallallaahu &#8216;alayhe wa sallam<\/em>) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0633\u0628\u0627\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0633\u0644\u0645 \u0641\u0633\u0648\u0642\u060c \u0648\u0642\u062a\u0627\u0644\u0647 \u0643\u0641\u0631<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Insulting a Muslim is <em>fusooq<\/em> (sinful disobedience), and fighting him is <em>kufr<\/em> (ingratitude, a lesser kind of disbelief).&#8221;<\/strong> [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps they may say these things without that person&#8217;s presence, then it is even worse.
