{"id":1681,"date":"2011-09-20T05:53:16","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T05:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net:\/en\/?p=1681"},"modified":"2011-09-20T06:43:01","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T06:43:01","slug":"ruling-aqeeqah-obligation-recommended-sunnah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/ruling-aqeeqah-obligation-recommended-sunnah.htm","title":{"rendered":"The Ruling on the &#8216;Aqeeqah (Slaughtering for a Newborn)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In the Name of Allaah&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Aqeeqah:<\/strong><\/em> Slaughtering\u00a0sheep after the birth of a newborn, two for a boy, one for a girl, preferably on the seventh day after the birth.<\/p>\n<p>Ibn Qudaamah (d.620), may Allaah have Mercy on him,\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The &#8216;aqeeqah is a Sunnah (recommended deed) according to the vast majority of the scholars, like Ibn &#8216;Abbaas, Ibn &#8216;Umar, &#8216;Aa&#8217;ishah, the jurists of the taabi&#8217;oon (those who came after the companions), and the scholars of the various lands, with the exception of\u00a0Ahlur-Ra&#8217;y (the Hanafees), who\u00a0held that it was from the customs of Jaahliyyah (the pre-Islamic period of ignorance)&#8230; And Al-Hasan (al-Basree) and Daawood (ath-Thaahiree) held it to be an obligation&#8230;&#8221; <em>[1]<\/em><!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He went on to cite <em>ijmaa&#8217;<\/em> (scholarly concensus) that it is recommended and not obligatory, however his quotes from the scholars who opposed this disproves any claim of concensus. [2]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Order for the<em> &#8216;Aqeeqah<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some narrations from the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace)\u00a0include\u00a0or indicate\u00a0directives\u00a0to perform the<em>&#8216;aqeeqah<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Salmaan ibn &#8216;Aamir adh-Dhabbee (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that\u00a0the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u0645\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u063a\u0644\u0627\u0645 \u0639\u0642\u064a\u0642\u0629 \u0641\u0623\u0647\u0631\u064a\u0642\u0648\u0627 \u0639\u0646\u0647 \u062f\u0645\u064b\u0627 \u0648\u0623\u0645\u064a\u0637\u0648\u0627 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u00a0\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0630\u0649<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;Along with a newborn son is an &#8216;aqeeqah, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">so spill blood for him<\/span> (i.e. slaughter sheep), and remove the harm from him (i.e. shave his hair).&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> [3]<\/p>\n<p>And &#8216;Aa&#8217;ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said, <em>&#8220;The\u00a0Messenger of Allaah\u00a0(may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) <strong>ordered<\/strong> <strong>us<\/strong> to slaughter\u00a0a sheep for a newborn girl, and two sheep for a boy.&#8221;<\/em> [4]\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the Vast Majority of Scholars\u00a0Understood the Order<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the vast majority of the scholars understood these directives to be orders of recommended guidance, when comparing them to the remaining texts on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Abdullaah ibn &#8216;Amr ibn al-&#8216;Aas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u0645\u0646 \u0648\u0644\u062f \u0644\u0647 \u0648\u0644\u062f \u0641\u0623\u062d\u0628 \u0623\u0646 \u064a\u0646\u0633\u0643 \u0639\u0646\u0647 \u0641\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0633\u0643\u060c \u0639\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u063a\u0644\u0627\u0645 \u0634\u0627\u062a\u0627\u0646 \u0645\u0643\u0627\u0641\u0626\u062a\u0627\u0646 \u0648\u0639\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0627\u0631\u064a\u0629 \u0634\u0627\u0629<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>&#8220;Whoever has a newborn child and wants to slaughter for him, let him do so: Two sheep is sufficient for a boy, and one sheep for a girl.&#8221;<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> [5]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The majority of the scholars\u00a0consider this text to be a clear indication that the directives from the Messenger (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) regarding the <em>&#8216;aqeeqah<\/em> were not absolute orders, but recommendations of guidance.
