11 or 20 Rak&#8217;ahs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left; font-family: arial; color: #000000; font-size: 100%;\">\u00a0<strong>Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah<\/strong> (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;The night prayers of Ramadhan have not been limited to a specific number\u00a0(of rak&#8217;ahs).\u00a0\u00a0He (the Prophet) himself (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him\u00a0peace) used to pray no more than 13 rak&#8217;ahs in\u00a0Ramadhan or any\u00a0other time.\u00a0 However, he\u00a0used to\u00a0pray with long rak&#8217;ahs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When &#8216;Umar gathered the people behind Ubayy ibn Ka&#8217;b, he (Ubayy)\u00a0used to pray 20 rak&#8217;ahs with them, and then pray three rak&#8217;ahs of witr.\u00a0 He used to recite less in\u00a0the rak&#8217;ahs to compensate for the increased number, since that was easier for the believers than long rak&#8217;ahs.<\/p>\n<p>After that, some\u00a0of the Salaf used to pray 40 rak&#8217;ahs, adding\u00a0three for witr.<\/p>\n<p>Others prayed 36 rak&#8217;ahs, adding three for witr.<\/p>\n<p>All of this\u00a0was acceptable.\u00a0\u00a0Whichever of these ways a person chooses to pray in Ramadhan is fine.<\/p>\n<p>The best\u00a0scenario differs depending on the people&#8217;s situations.\u00a0 If they can stand for\u00a0a long time, then\u00a0ten rak&#8217;ahs with three for witr is best, as it was the\u00a0steady practice of the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) in Ramadhan and\u00a0other times.<\/p>\n<p>If the people can not stand for long periods of time, then 20 rak&#8217;ahs is better.\u00a0 This is what most of the\u00a0Muslims\u00a0do, since it is a middle ground between\u00a0ten and 40.\u00a0 It is permissible for\u00a0someone to pray 40 or some other number\u00a0(of rak&#8217;ahs), and there is nothing disliked about that.\u00a0 This has\u00a0been mentioned explicitly by a number of imaams, like Ahmad for example.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who\u00a0assumes that the\u00a0night prayers of Ramadhan have been limited by the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) to a set\u00a0number that must be adhered to without any increase or decrease has surely erred&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[And Allaah knows best.]<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Source:<\/strong> His Fataawee (22\/272) <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bakkah.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ibn-taymiyyah-on-how-many-rakahs-taraaweeh.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>[PDF]<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said: &#8220;&#8230;The night prayers of Ramadhan have not been limited to a specific number\u00a0(of rak&#8217;ahs).\u00a0\u00a0He (the Prophet) himself (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him\u00a0peace) used to pray no &hellip;
