Can you please verify the following hadeeth?

“O Allah I call You to witness and I call the bearers of Your Throne Your angels and all Your creatures to witness that You are Allah and there is no god except You and that Muhammad is Your slave and messenger.”

In the book it quotes the following; Anas reported Allahs Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as saying “If anyone says it in the morning or evening ( the above ) then Allah will free a quarter of him from the fire. Whoever says it twice Allah will free half of him from the fire.  Whoever says it three times Allah will free three quarters if him from the fire. Whoever says it four times Allah will free him from the fire (completely).” At-Tirmidhi transmitted it saying, “This is a Hasan hadeeth.”

At-Tirmithee collected it in his Jaami’ (#3501) and called it ghareeb (strange), not hasan as mentioned in the question. A hadeeth is usually dha’eef (weak, unauthentic) when At-Tirmithee says it is ghareeb.

Aboo Daawood also collected it in his Sunan (#5078).

It was graded hasan by al-Munthiree in at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb.

It was called “hasan-saheeh” by Ibn Taymiyyah in al-Kalim at-Tayyib (his du’aa’ collection).

Al-Albaanee refutes this in Silsilatul-Ahaadeethid-Dha’eefah (#1041) in detail, showing the weaknesses of both chains of this hadeeth and how they can not be used to strengthen each other. This argument is convincing, and seems to be what is most correct about this hadeeth. And Allaah knows best.

  1. Jazakallahu khyr for clarifying this hadeeth.

This Dua is also found in ‘Hisnul Muslim’ of Sa’id ibn Wahf al Qahtani in the ‘Words of rememberance in morning and evening’.

    Barakallahu feek

  2. In hisnul Muslim, al-Adab al-Mufrad lil Bukhaari is cited as a source for this dua.Does this mean that Adab alMufrad contains dhaeef ahadeeth?BaarakAllaahu feek.

  3. The narrations in Hisn ul Muslim are not the one from Tirmidhi that you cited in this discussion. They are:

2 “Allah will spare whoever says this four times in the morning or evening from the fire of Hell, ” Abu Dawud 4/317. It was also reported by Al-Bukhari in Al-‘Adab Al-Mufrad, An-Nasa’i in ‘Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah and Ibn As-Sunni. Nasa’i’s and Abu Dawud’s chains of transmission are good (Hasan), Ibn Baz, p. 23.

So am I correct in thinking that this supplication has been authenticated by other routes and so can still be recited as part if the adkhaar?

  4. Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatu.
Are those who only follow the Qur’aan (as they say) destined to go to hell due to this statement of Allaah (even though we cannot guarantee that about any person):
    وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِۦ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِۦ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَسَآءَتْ مَصِيرًا
    Translation by Muhsin Khan:
“And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination!”
    (4:115)
May Allaah reward you for the upkeeping of this site.

    • Wa ‘alayk as-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Yes, it is a proof that they actually reject the Quran which they claim to follow. There are many, many Verses like this one that can be used to identify them clearly as disbelievers.

    • Ghareeb means it comes from only one route, for at least part of the chain of transmission. Hasan is a grading of that one route. These two terms are completely compatible.
