Here you will find helpful resources and guidance, by Allah’s Permission, connected to the seminar at Masjid Alfarouq in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), which took place starting on Muharram 29, 1445 (Aug.16-20, 2023), wal-hamdu lillaah, along with special information about the official seminar workbook and some exclusive images of its content.

In anticipation of the seminar, Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson stated:

Upon visiting our brothers in Islam and Sunnah at Masjid Alfarouq in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) earlier this year, based on the advice of Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Maghribi (may Allah preserve him), I was delighted to find such beautiful cooperation at an emerging community upon Salafiyyah there. May Allah bless them and increase them in good. Their good efforts to learn and host special events for the benefit of their community and the Muslims of Edmonton at large are exemplary and deserving of our support…

This upcoming fourth seminar, scheduled for the end of Muharram 1445 (August 16-20, 2023), in shaa’ Allah, is another five-day event, similar to the last one. This time, Shaykh Abu Muhammad will be broadening the focus of family matters to include more practical advice and guidance for parents and children, siblings, as well as spouses, in shaa’ Allah. I will continue sharing and explaining verses from the same poetry on Islamic Legal Maxims. After considering that a significant number of the local congregants grew up in communities and households where the Maalikee math-hab is taught, I thought to explain a small text in basic Islamic Creed by an exemplary Maalikee scholar of old, al-Imaam Ibn Abee Zayd al-Qayrawaanee (may Allah have Mercy on him).

Unity When Fasting and On the Day of the ‘Eed [al-Albaanee]

By: Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen Al-Albaanee (may Allah have Mercy on him)
Source: Silsilatul-Ahaadeeth As-Saheehah #224 (1/440-445)

[ In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, may His Salaah and Salaam be upon his final Messenger Muhammad, and upon all his family members and Companions, to proceed… ]

Regarding the hadeeth:

الصوم يوم تصومون والفطر يوم تفطرون

“Fasting begins on the day you all begin to fast, and Al-Fitr (the ‘Eed) is the day when you all have broken your fasts.” [1]

At-Tirmithee, after mentioning this hadeeth, said, “And some of the people of knowledge explained this hadeeth, saying that fasting and breaking the fast are both done along with the Jamaa’ah and the masses of the Muslims.”

And As-San’aanee said, “In it is evidence that proves that agreement of the people is needed for establishing the ‘Eed, and that the one who is alone in his knowledge of the moon sighting must go along with the others, and their decision regarding the prayer, the breaking of the fast, and the day of slaughtering is binding on him.” [2]

And Ibnul-Qayyim, may Allah have Mercy on him, explained this, saying, “And it has been said (by the people of knowledge) that there is a refutation in this for those who say that a person can fast and break his fast based on calculated estimations, without others having knowledge of this. And it has also been said that if a lone witness sights the moon, and the judge does not accept his sighting (for some reason), then he himself does not begin his fast based on it, nor do the people begin their fasts based on it.” [3]

And Abul-Hasan As-Sindee, after mentioning the hadeeth of Aboo Hurayrah found in At-Tirmithee’s Sunan, said, “And what is apparent from the hadeeth’s meaning is that these affairs are not Continue reading

Al-hamdu lillaah, we are pleased to announce that our latest publication, Islamic Legal Maxims: Terminology, Foundations, & Principles: Study Guide for Shaykh Uthaymeen’s Poetry on Usool al-Fiqh, is now available for purchase worldwide!

This unique resource brings the amazing poem of Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him) into the English Language for the very first time! From the introduction of the workbook written by Ustaadh Moosaa Richardson:

For those who did not know that our teacher, the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him), actually wrote his own poetry, then this poem might come as one of the most pleasant surprises imaginable! This original poetry on the topic of Usool al-Fiqh, was actually composed by the shaykh himself and then explained in detail over many classes. The recordings of those sessions have been transcribed and published as a 384-page book, under the supervision of the shaykh’s charitable foundation. I have included an appendix in the back of this workbook which includes the entire poem in the shaykh’s own handwriting (!), as facilitated by the shaykh’s charitable foundation and found in the Ibn al-Jowzee printing (3rd ed., 1434). The recordings of his explanation are available at his website at the following address: https://binothaimeen.net/content/Menu/lessonsince?tid=1221 Continue reading

The Importance of Learning Usool al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Maxims)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

The topic of Usool al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Maxims) is extremely important for all those who wish to understand how evidences are applied to various situations. Ignorance of these principles and foundations can cause a total failure in understanding the verdicts of the scholars on modern issues of importance and their details and complexities. Without the tools by which to understand how the scholars derive and apply their rulings, even a sincere, truth-seeking individual from Ahlus-Sunnah might fail to understand their use of broadly applicable principles and foundations, and then falsely assume that they have spoken without evidence.

In his poetry on Usool al-Fiqh, the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have Mercy on him), stated:

اغْتَنِمِ القَوَاعِدَ الأُصُولَا ## فَمَنْ تَفُتْهُ يُـحْرَمِ الوُصُولَا
Take advantage of the qawaa’id (principles) and usool (foundations),
Whoever misses them is deprived of attainment [of knowledge].

In his printed lessons explaining the poem, Sharh Manthoomat Usool al-Fiqh wa Qawaa’idihi (p.44), he explained:

This is a principle the scholars have: “Whoever is deprived of the foundations shall be deprived of arrival at his goal,” and they spoke the truth! Thus, we must be vigilant about understanding these principles, learning all that is included in them, researching them together, and asking those who know more than us about them, so we could actualize the point of studying them, with sincere intentions and good follow-through. Whoever misses out on these principles could only study Islamic knowledge issue by issue, one at a time, as he has no foundation to build anything on [for himself]. Thus, his knowledge is flawed, his thought process is slow and irregular, and he forgets issues easily…

Getting Serious in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

There are two important narrations from our mother, the noble Companion, ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which every Muslim should keep in mind as the last ten nights of Ramadan approach:

إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ: أَحْيَا اللَّيْلَ، وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ، وَجَدَّ وَشَدَّ الْمِئْزَرَ
“When the [last] ten [nights of Ramadan] began, he would stay up all night, wake his family, get [even more] serious, and tighten his lower garment.”

This hadeeth was collected by al-Bukhaaree (2024) and Muslim (1174).

In another authentic narration, she asked about what she should say if she were to reach Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of al-Qadr, and so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) told her to say: Continue reading

The Return to Connected Rows (Without Gaps) at the Two Sacred Mosques in Makkah and al-Madeenah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

In a very significant historical event, al-hamdu lillaah, at Fajr Prayer on the morning of Sunday, the 11th of Rabee’ al-Awwal, 1443 (October 17, 2021), restrictions requiring distance between the people in prayer at the two sacred mosques were officially lifted, and for the first time in a year and a half, Muslims praying there heard the imaam request the people to come together in the rows and not leave any gaps. People of Sunnah around the world rejoice and understand this to be a monumental event, a welcome relief, a comfort to the heart and soul, and a long-awaited sign of good things to come, in shaa’ Allah.

2021-10-17 08_15_09-Amazing.Fajr Salah Masjid Al Haram, Makkah after capacity restrictions were -b

Why Were Such Restrictions There in the First Place?

Praying side-by-side, without gaps, is something our Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) ordered when he would line the people up for prayer. This obligation was (and still is, in other mosques) only being foregone temporarily, because of the need to take precautions against the spread of Covid-19, something deemed by the senior Muslim scholars, top governmental Muslim leaders, and appointed and responsible Muslim health officials to be a serious threat to human life and safety. In the most urgent matters of emergencies that jeopardize the health and well being of many millions of people, the Book of Allah certainly leads us to safety and prosperity:

return things to ahlul ilm in nawaazil

This is a good beginning, yet all other masjids there at this time continue to operate under the well-known safety precautions of wearing masks, distancing in the rows, and bringing personal prayer rugs. May Allah make us grateful for both the removal of the restrictions at the two Harams and for the care and concern the Muslim scholars and authorities have shown for the health and well-being of the Muslims all over the world.

Here you will find helpful resources and guidance, by Allah’s Permission, connected to the study of al-Arba’een an-Nawawiyyah (an-Nawawee’s Forty Hadeeth) in the English Language. You can also learn some very interesting historical details about the course which was completed at al-Masjid al-Awwal in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA), as well as many important things about the course materials and other resources, as well as what upcoming recordings and resources you can look forward to, in shaa’ Allah.

The Course: An-Nawawee’s Forty Hadeeth

Shortly after my return to America, our respected community at al-Masjid al-Awwal in Pittsburgh suggested that I teach the Forty Hadeeth Collection of al-Haafidh an-Nawawee (may Allah have Mercy on him), along with the explanation of one of my teachers, Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan (may Allah preserve and protect him). Seeking the Aid and Assistance of Allah, I obliged and (I believe) we began our study on Saturday night, the eve of the 15th day of Muharram, 1436. [1] (This corresponds to November 8, 2014 on the modern pagan calendar.)

Shortly after we began this new weekly class, on the eve of the 11th day of Safar, I was given a precious gift – my copy of the book, al-Minhat ar-Rabbaaniyyah (the explanation of Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan, by my beloved brother, Abur-Rabee’ Nafees ibn Muhammad Moorefield (may Allah bless and protect him). As is my custom in receiving books as gifts, I made a note about that on the title page:

What Blessings Could Come From the Closing of Masjids?!

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful…

I was recently involved in consultations over the most difficult decision I have ever been part of in my life. I attempted to keep to the command of Allah, to return matters back to the most knowledgeable and capable scholars, who know best about the application of Islamic rulings to specific situations:

وإذا جاءهم أمر من الأمن أو الخوف أذاعوا به ولو ردوه إلى الرسول وإلى أولي الأمر منهم لعلمه الذين يستنبطونه منهم ولولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته لاتبعتم الشيطان إلا قليلا

“When a matter of [public] safety or fear reaches them, they openly spread it. Yet, had they only returned it back to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those who extract and apply rulings would have known about it. And had it not been for the Bounty of Allah upon you and His Mercy, you would have all followed the Shaytaan, save a few.” (Quran 4:83)

I feared that the wrong decision from myself, independently, could lead to severe harm and lives lost. I did not want to be among those whom our Messenger (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) referred to, after they issued a ruling that a man with wounds had to take a bath, and no concession applied to his case, which led to his death:

قتلوه قتلهم الله
“They killed him, may Allah destroy them!”
(Abu Dawud, authentic by way of its numerous routes)

I had to place my trust in Allah fully, and in His Words:

إنما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء
“Those who truly fear Allah among His worshipers are the scholars.” (Quran 35:28)

I placed my trust in Allah, and then I looked to those whom He commanded me to trust and return to, and I made the same decision that they made, to close masjids. I can only have good thoughts about those whom Allah has raised and entrusted with such a highly impacting verdict, those known for lifetimes of facilitating knowledge and worship, those who have more love and care for the Muslims and their safety than me, with lives of 50, 60, 70 years of work proving that. I firmly trust that they would not support the closing of masjids unless it were an absolute emergency, to avoid serious losses and protect the Muslims and the world from serious harm. I hold that to be the case, and I do not believe that I love this Ummah more than my scholars, great men of knowledge and piety. I thank Allah that He has not made me in a position to make decisions on the level they are responsible for. I know my place, and I prayed istikhaarah to close our local masjid for a time, and to support communities in the temporary closing of their masjids. I would never, ever support such an idea, except that I believe that this is better with my Lord, and better for His worshipers. I beg Allah to forgive me and my brothers and sisters, and to guide us to acts of piety and sincerity, and to allow us to regain His Favor that we have lost!

I further believe that, Continue reading
